About the Job

Purpose: The Holifield Radioactive on Beam Facility (HRIBF) at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory invites applications for the position of Accelerator Operator. This is a national user facility which is dedicated to the production of radioactive ion beams (RIBs) for nuclear structure and nuclear astrophysics research. The HRIBF operates two particle accelerators, the Oak Ridge Isochronous Cyclotron (ORIC) and the 25 MV Tandem Electrostatic Accelerator, in support of this mission. To learn more about the HRIBF, visit our web site at http://www.phy.ornl.gov/hribf /.

Major Duties/Responsibilities: The successful candidate will be responsible for the safe operation of all HRIBF accelerator systems and adherence to HRIBF Operating Procedures.

Major duties and responsibilities:

* Perform accelerator startup, shutdown, and tuning as required to produce accelerated ion beams for the HRIBF experimental program. Monitor and adjust accelerator systems during operation.
* Become proficient in the operation, maintenance and troubleshooting of ion sources, beam transport lines, vacuum systems, cooling systems, computer control systems, and power supplies.
* Provide technical support to the engineering staff including troubleshooting and performance of routine maintenance tasks.
* Complete training requirements for certification to operate the Oak Ridge Isochronous Cyclotron (ORIC), the 25 MV Tandem Electrostatic Accelerator and other HRIBF systems within a reasonable period, and comply with retraining requirements to maintain certification.
* Work on a rotating shift, as needed to support accelerator operations, both during and after the training period. Weekend work is required as needed to achieve program goals.
* Ensure safe operation of HRIBF accelerator systems
* Accept and implement the tenets of the ORNL Integrated Safety Management System and related environmental, safety, health and quality program requirements, and ensure compliance by personnel working under the successful candidate’s direction.
* Maintain a strong commitment to the implementation and perpetuation of values and ethics.
* Serve as a member of the facility emergency response team and maintain training in the use of self-contained breathing apparatus. Coordinate response to emergencies until relieved by the LSS, Physics Division Emergence Response Coordinator, or designee.
* Ensure that shift-related HRIBF operational activities and data are accurately entered into operations logs.

Qualifications Required: This position requires an Associate's Degree in physics, chemistry, engineering, or a related technical subject, or equivalent training and relevant experience. Previous experience working with large systems such as ultra-high vacuum systems, de-mineralized water coolant systems, accelerator beam lines, electromagnets and ion optics. Experience as an accelerator operator preferred. Ability to work a rotating work schedule is mandatory. A reasonable degree of manual or physical labor is required. The candidate must be comfortable working in tight and confined spaces and maintain confined space training. Excellent communication skills are required.
