Journal Communications is a diversified media company with operations in publishing, radio and television broadcasting, interactive media and printing services. We publish the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, which serves as the only major daily newspaper for the Milwaukee metropolitan area, and, through our subsidiary, Journal Community Publishing Group, more than 50 community newspapers and shoppers in Wisconsin and Florida.

The Accounting Supervisor will monitor accounting department deadlines to ensure timely and accurate completion

Reporting to the Accounting Manager, the position is responsible for the following:

1. Supervision of 3 accountants, who are responsible for:

• preparing financial accounts for 4 radio markets. This includes working with the Financial Analysts to ensure the accuracy of the accounts and that all variances to budget, forecast, etc are analyzed

• auditing the fixed assets at each market to ensure accuracy of records

• calculation of sales commissions

• processing the inter-company charges from the parent company

• processing changes to the accruals and prepayments required for the whole company

• preparing journals to record payroll expense and liabilities

• preparing bank reconciliations

2. Preparing the financial accounts for the Tucson market.

3. Calculating the quarterly bonus payments to sales staff

4. Review accuracy of Accountants’ work ensuring deadlines are met and reconciliations are complete and accurate.

5. Assist Accounting Manager with creating and updating accounting policies and procedures.

Provide recommendations to Accounting Manager on process and efficiency improvements within the accounting department.

6. Provide individual guidance, direction and coaching to direct reports through performance feedback, training and developmental recommendations.

7. Special Projects as assigned.

 

• Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting
• Minimum 5 years accounting experience; public accounting or broadcast industry experience desired but not required.
• Strong financial accounting experience
• Ability to build effective working relationships
• Supervisory experience a plus, but not required
• Enthusiasm, courtesy and willingness to learn
• Must be able to communicate and interact effectively with multi-functional and diverse backgrounds.
