This employee assists the Principal Investigator with the administration of the Wise Laboratory, a complex scientific laboratory comprised of 6-8 permanent staff and a similar number of temporary and student workers. He/she provides advice and counsel to the PI on strategic planning, personnel recruitment and management, intra-department relations and infrastructure support. S/he manages all administrative aspects of the laboratory, and coordinates with building operations staff. S/he has a lead role in assigning daily responsibilities and providing updates to lab staff. S/he oversees both routine and non-routine administrative operations, including, but not limited to: personnel issues, extensive travel planning for staff and collaborators, financial management of grants, contracts and laboratory budgets, and database organization for both scientific and administrative work. The Administrative Manager assists the PI with strategic planning and professional development for the lab, identifies funding sources, prepares grant proposals, and edits and submits scientific reports and presentations. May represent PI during PI’s absences from the laboratory. This person routinely makes decisions that carry both short and long term impact, requiring independent judgment and initiative. Travel, while not frequent, is required both within and without the State of Maine, and internationally.
Qualifications: Bachelor’s degree in a scientific discipline and 5 years experience in administrative management, preparing and administering budgets, laboratory and office management or equivalent combination of education and experience.
