Our PATHOLOGY department has an outstanding opportunity for an ANATOMIC PATHOLOGY TECHNOLOGIST.This is an excellent opportunity for a skilled histotechnologist who is highly adaptable, a good communicator, enjoys variety, new challenges and wants to work in a department dedicated to providing excellent patient care. This position is responsible for performing routine and complex procedures for services such as histology, neuropathology molecular pathology, immunohistochemistry and/or autopsy. Work includes accessioning, processing, embedding, cutting and staining all types of tissue specimens received in the Histology/Neuropathology. This is currently a Monday-Friday position on day shift. The Pathology Lab has just completed a move to our new state-of-the art lab facility in Fall 2009.
The person in this role will: Prepare specimens and perform procedures using microtome, lab instrumentation, computer and current methodologies in various services of anatomic pathology, such as histology, neuropathology, molecular pathology, and autopsy.
Acquire, examine and prepare specimens for analysis; prepare specimens for microscopic evaluation by the pathologist such as processing, embedding, microtomy, Hematoxylin and Eosin (H&E) staining, special staining, coverslipping slides. Provide procedural information and specimen protocol to medical or academic staff and customers from referring institutions/agencies.
Assist pathologists with frozen section staining and processing.
Implement, monitor, and perform quality control of specimens; verify that the staining shows adequate cellular distinction; assure accurate specimen labeling; and distribute to the pathologist responsible for reviewing the case. Determine disposition of improperly handled specimens; identify problems, take corrective action, notify supervisor and monitor follow-up solutions.
Complete all instrument function verification, changing/rotating solutions, maintenance, and documents in accordance to lab procedures; analyze and determine cause(s) of instrument malfunction.
Ensure that equipment defects and malfunctions are reported and repaired; maintain quality control of instruments; evaluate new products and instruments to provide input in decision process.
Assist in developing and assessing the impact of new procedures in the laboratory; implement and evaluate the requirements to comply with CAP (College of American Pathologists) standards.
Perform immunoperoxidase and immunofluorescence procedures; determine correct concentration of new antibodies using checkerboard titration.
Assist in the Molecular Lab if needed and with appropriate training. Tasks may include: organizing samples, set up grids for testing, printing reports and performing tests.
Maintain a neat, clean, and orderly work area. Responsible for the cleaning of his/her microtome, filing his/ her cut blocks and cleaning any soiled glassware at the end of the day's work.
Train new employees in pathology procedures, preparation of reagents, and in the proper use and theory of laboratory instrumentation.
Participate in evaluating and implementing new technology/techniques/equipment for use in the lab.

- Certification, or certified within two years of date of hire, at the Technologist level by a nationally recognized certifying agency such as the American Society of Clinical Pathologists, the American Society of Clinical Laboratory Scientists or the Microscopy Society of America.
- At least one year of clinical anatomic laboratory experience. OR equivalent education/experience. |  | | Desired: | - 5+ years combined experience in histology and one or more of the following specialties: neuropathology, immunohistochemistry or molecular pathology
- Experience with both manual and automated technology in histology labs.
- Two years of clinical anatomic laboratory experience.
- Excellent cutting skills.
- Excellent communication skills and ability to exercise independent judgment and decision making in problem identification and resolution.
- High proficiency with computer and anatomic lab equipment and systems. |
