Additional Job Details The focus of our laboratory is development of a therapy for juvenile diabetes. Our model system involves transplanting encapsulated pig islet cells as a source of insulin into diabetic mice. The successful candidate will perform routine and specialized duties associated with care of mice, including feeding, medicating, cleaning, restraint and transportation. He or she will maintain an inventory of necessary supplies and equipment, observe animal behavior and conditions, collect specimens and provide technical assistance to research and veterinary personnel.

Specialized duties include performing weekly urine glucose tests on diabetes-prone NOD mice to identify animals that have developed diabetes, and then administering insulin to diabetic mice daily, keeping records of the conversion rate to diabetes and informing research personnel of the number of diabetic mice available for experiments each week. Additional responsibilities include treating NOD-Scid mice with streptozotocin to induce diabetes when needed for experiments, measuring blood glucose levels daily in diabetic mice that have been transplanted with insulin-secreting islets, keeping records of the blood glucose levels in the computer database and in lab notebooks, and making graphs or tables of data for presentation at weekly lab meetings. The animal care technician will transport mice to the laboratory in a timely manner when they are needed for experiments, assist with surgery, and monitor the mice during recovery from surgery. He or she will also aliquot and administer immunosuppressive drugs to mice and keep records of complex drug treatment schedules. Additional duties may involve sacrificing mice to obtain cells for experiments, counting the cells with a hemocytometer, performing insulin ELISA assays, glucose-stimulated insulin release assays, radioimmunoassays, porcine C peptide assays, and preparation of various lab reagents.

The successful candidate will perform related responsibilities as required. Employees in this classification may be required to work with, take specific precautions against and/or be immunized against potentially hazardous agents.
