SEIU Local 1000, a progressive public sector union representing 95,000 state employees, is recruiting an Assistant Controller for its Sacramento, California office.    SEIU Local 1000 has 200 employees in seven offices throughout California. 


The Assistant Controller is responsible for the financial planning and management of the Union’s budget.  This senior position is responsible for the accounting, budgeting and reporting systems of the Union.  This position is also responsible for monitoring and reporting on the financial performance of campaigns, councils and departments.

 

Duties:

 

·         Prepares and reviews the monthly and annual GAAP-based financial statements

·         Prepares analysis and reconciliation of financial statements

·         Prepares bank reconciliation

·         Facilitates year-end audits and follow-ups on recommendations and action items

·         Prepares annual tax returns

·         Assists Controller in setting up and monitoring internal control process, including review of checks, expense claims and advances

·         Assists Controller in creating and improving accounting process and procedures

·         Writes up Accounting Policy and Procedure Manual

·         Manages daily operation of accounting functions

·         Performs analysis on special projects

·         Facilitates accounting system conversion 

·         Assists Controller in training staff and others on accounting and payroll procedures

·         Other duties in support of the Union’s mission

 

Qualifications:

·         Five or more years experience in a senior accounting role, including experience preparing and managing financial reports and budgets

·         Experience implementing automated accounting and payroll systems and establishing departmental budgets 

·         Experience with accounting and cost control principles

·         Excellent communication and interpersonal skills

·         Bachelor’s degree in Accounting

·         CPA licensee preferred

·         Ability to travel occasionally and work overtime or weekends
