About the Job

Summary: Will be involved in the drafting of commercial agreements and other legal documents, participate in and support commercial negotiations, advise clients as to legal rights and regulatory compliance and practice other phases of law by performing other duties that may be assigned including but not limited to the following:

 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

 

Represent client before quasi-judicial or administrative agencies of government.

Interpret laws, rulings, and regulations.  

Draft legal documents and conduct or assist with commercial negotiations.

Confer with colleagues with specialty in area of lawsuits to establish and verify basis for legal proceedings. Advise clients concerning environmental actions and corporate relations with general public.

Negotiate corrective actions with federal, state, and local agencies on behalf of company or client.

Gather evidence to formulate defense or to initiate legal action for cases.

Conduct research, interview clients and witnesses, and handle other details in preparation for trial.

Analyze legal positions and pending or potential claims or litigation to develop strategy, arguments, and resolutions.

 

Supervisory Responsibilities:

 

This job currently has no direct supervisory responsibilities. However, a successful applicant will be required to interact and advise other team members to facilitate the best decisions being made on behalf of the company.

Qualifications:

 

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required. All applicants must have an active license to practice law in at least one State or the District of Columbia (Kansas is preferred, but other states will be considered). Prior legal experience working for or in support of a transportation industry or any other regulated industry is preferred but not required.

 

Education and/or Experience:

 

Bachelors’ Degree, Juris Doctorate from an accredited law school, and three to five years of corporate/commercial law experience are required. Additionally, some background with property and/or environmental law experience will be viewed favorably.
