Automation Technician-Electrical & Instrumentation



SUMMARY DESCRIPTION:


The Automation Technician (E&I) provides technician support needed to plan, repair, install, and maintain the Duluth mill’s electrical and instrumentation systems and equipment, and carry out responsibilities in a manner which will ensure that the mills’ electrical/instrumentation systems and equipment are kept in such a state of operations and readiness that they can effectively support each mill in its efforts to maintain stable and highly productive operations.


ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS/RESPONSIBILITIES:


·Repair and maintain automation systems and equipment in an assigned area of the mills.


·Make rounds of assigned area, locating and troubleshooting automation malfunctions; operate programmable controllers and distributive controls; and configure controllers for required troubleshooting.


·Inspect and test automation equipment as required.


·Acquire proficiency in monitoring, diagnosing, and correcting electrical and instrument equipment problems and improve the design, operation, and monitoring of automation systems and equipment to maximize the reliability of the equipment, process, and product quality.


·Participate on teams, task forces, and other groups to correct electrical and instrument problems.


·Arrange for maintenance of equipment within area of responsibility, including using a computerized maintenance management system to plan repairs; for preventative maintenance; to order parts, tools, and services from vendors; and prepare requests for new equipment.


·Maintain a multi-skilled area of ownership which includes work order management, preventive/predictive maintenance, safety and environmental follow-up and other associated tasks.


·Participate in the training of automation apprentices as required.


·Perform work without committing unsafe acts, maintain a safe and orderly work area, and participate in Mill safety programs.


·Keep other team members aware of problems, status of work, and prioritization of daily activities.


·Learn and follow each quality and environmental procedure within areas of responsibility.


·Know and understand the quality and environmental objectives and their role in achieving them.


·Know and understand the occupational health and safety objectives and their role in achieving them.


·Take responsibility to act within the parameters of each skill area to avoid or minimize any quality or environmental non-conformances.


 


 


EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:




  •  Requires completion of an electrical or instrument apprenticeship program or equivalent vocational/technical school training, plus at least 3 years of industrial experience working in the electrical or instrumentation field.

  • Any equivalent combination of education, training, and/or experience.
    Note:  Special consideration will be given to qualified individuals with proficiency in both electrical and instrumentation fields

SKILLS/COMPETENCIES REQUIRED:


This position will require an individual to:


·         Communicate effectively.


·         Must be able to read and interpret loop drawings, prints, and ladder logic.


·         Must be able to distinguish colors.


·         Be able to work in an empowered team system environment and also work alone.


·         Possess ambulatory capabilities to be able to move freely about the mill, including moving required equipment, tools, and parts to job site; be able to climb and work in high places; and do a considerable amount of bending, stooping, reaching, turning, twisting, and medium work (lifting 25-50 pounds) in carrying out responsibilities of position.


·         Work with personal computers efficiently.


·         Be able to work on and around machinery, including working with high voltages.


·         Be willing to work weekends, nights, 12-hours shifts, and be subject to occasional overtime to meet the needs for the position.
