Autonomous Underwater Vehicle (AUV) System Software Engineer

Education/Experience


 



  • Bachelors Degree in Ocean or Mechanical Engineering with a concentration in AUV control system and payload interface software. Master’s degree preferred.
  • 1-2 years experience in:

-       AUV vehicle control and payload interface software.


-       C/C++ and MatLab programming in Linux and Windows environments.


-       Relevant master’s degree coursework and research can be substituted for experience.


 


Basic Functions of the Job


 


Under the supervision of the AUV System Engineer, design, develop, install, test, and operate all AUV system software including the vehicle communication, control, payload interface, sonar and image processing, and autonomy modules. Design and develop innovative AUV control and autonomy algorithms and payloads to support unique AUV missions.


 


technical performance responsibility


 



  • Install, configure, and use appropriate development environments for various types of single board computers including PC104, NetBurner, and SmartCat.
  • Work with mechanical engineering personnel and consultants to develop, code, install, modify, and maintain the AUV control system and vehicle status software.

-       Familiarity with AUV dynamics/hydrodynamics and equations of motion, PID feedback control systems, and INU/DVL systems a must. Motor/actuator control experience a plus.



  • Lead the development of payload interface and data collection/analysis software modules for all vehicle COTS payloads including forward looking, bathymetric, and side scan sonar systems, video data collection and image processing systems, and chemical sensing systems.
  • Work with unmanned vehicle autonomy software experts to develop, code, install, modify, and maintain the AUV autonomy software suite.

-       Familiarity with MOOS-IvP a plus.



  • Work with the AUV System Engineer to configure and interface with COTS acoustic communication (AComms) and vehicle tracking systems.

-       Familiarity with underwater acoustics and AComms systems a plus.



  • Assist in the research and development of innovative AUV control and autonomy algorithms and payloads to support unique AUV missions.
  • Assist in the conduct of AUV in-water runs for data collection and vehicle assessment.

travel: Requires approximately 10% travel.


clearance: Must be able to obtain and hold a DoD secret security clearance.
