Job Description

Behavioral Health Social Worker / LCSW – Mental Health Therapist

South Bay Mental Health is a culturally diverse and dynamic organization seeking a compassionate and committed Behavioral Health Social Worker to provide a continuum of community-based services to individuals, children, adults and families. In this role at South Bay, you will work with our professional and innovative clinical team to provide clients with a full range of counseling services for their mental health and substance abuse recovery needs. These include intensive family issues, trauma, forensics and mental illness. You will lead individual, family, couple and group therapy sessions, conduct client intake sessions and develop individual treatment plans for each client. You may also administer drug screens, facilitate crisis interventions and conduct case management activities.

Behavioral Health Social Worker / LCSW – Mental Health Therapist

As a Behavioral Health Social Worker with South Bay, you will bring your strengths and skills into play as a member of our dedicated team of professionals. You will have autonomy and independence in the provision of client services, knowing that you can depend on a solid professional support system as you work with clients who face numerous barriers to service access. 80% of your client visits will be conducted in the field, at client homes, schools and community centers, to accommodate clients who face barriers to service such as lack of transportation or childcare. You will also provide documentation and reports to referral providers and participate in multidisciplinary teams to present cases for proper treatment.

Additional responsibilities of the Behavioral Health Social Worker include:

  • Initiating, maintaining and completing clinical files and records for each client, including initial evaluations, assessments, treatment plans, session notes, transfer and termination summaries and other required documentation
  • Attending monthly in-service trainings
  • Maintaining competency in the field via ongoing in-house continuing education opportunities
  • Completing surveys and questionnaires as needed
  • Completing billing documentation according to schedule established by the clinic
  • Attending court hearings, CORE evaluations and other meetings as required
  • Informing appropriate staff of unusual occurrences
  • Maintaining daily contact with clinic during normal business hours
  • Keeping supervisor informed of case progress
  • Meeting designated billable expectations
  • Maintaining confidentiality in all clinical matters
  • Collecting co-payments

Job Requirements

When others give up hope, South Bay is just getting started. To succeed in this environment as a Behavioral Health Social Worker, you must possess superb verbal, written and interpersonal communication skills. You must be a self-starting good listener, able to meet clients on their own terms within their communities. You will need excellent time management skills, strong organization skills and the ability to effectively manage your schedule in case of client cancellations and other obstacles. You must be able to work independently and provide empathetic and caring services to individuals in difficult circumstances. . You must also possess a strong understanding of and commitment to South Bay’s mission to encourage the self-sufficiency of disadvantaged people through behavioral health care that is grounded in the community.

Additional requirements for the Behavioral Health Social Worker include:

  • Master’s degree in Social Work, Counseling, Psychology or a related field required; higher degree a plus
  • Minimum 1 year’s clinical experience required; experience working with underserved and/or at-risk positions preferred
  • Strong working knowledge and understanding of problems facing underserved and at-risk populations
  • Strong clinical and documentation abilities
  • Ability to build rapport with a wide variety of personalities
  • Valid driver’s license, insurance and reliable vehicle
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule
  • Ability to pass a background check
  • Valid LCSW, LICSW or LMHC license preferred
  • Bilingual abilities a plus
