We are currently seeking a Business Development Manager for armor systems. The expectation is that the individual in this position will be located in Columbus, Ohio.
As a Business Development Manager in the Industrial and International Market Sector (IIMS), the selected individual will be responsible for the development and sale of contract research for Battelle.
- Develops and drives business development strategy in the area of armor technology, with an emphasis on air and ground vehicle armor research, development, testing and evaluation (RDT&E).
- Works closely with scientific and engineering staff to perform market research, develop market plans and identify commercial, industrial, and government clients and opportunities.
- Responsible for growing a broad portfolio of client relationships in the area of armor technology, with an emphasis on vehicle armor RDT&E. Individual will be responsible for growing business to $10M/yr within three to five years.
- Manages marketing and proposal budgets. Responsible for delivering against financial targets, including sales, gross margin and contribution margin.
- Maintain sales database for business opportunities.
- Develops expert understanding of client needs to sell Battelle capabilities
- Negotiates with clients on prices, terms, and conditions of proposals and of licensing agreements
- Negotiates internally to develop consensus on prices, terms, and conditions of proposals and of licensing agreements
- Guides opportunities through Battelle internal processes to deliver appropriate and timely proposals to clients.
- Maintains and manages close relationship with clients to ensure business growth
- Works with technical staff to assess/develop market potential for internal R&D projects and to develop and manage intellectual property.
Position requires significant travel - as much as 50% of work week may be spent away from home office.
THE FOLLOWING REQUIREMENTS MUST BE MET TO BE CONSIDERED FOR THIS POSITION:
The successful candidate must possess the following qualifications:
- Must be US Citizen and able to hold US security clearance
- Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Physics, or equivalent experience in a related field.
- 5+ years of scientific and/or engineering experience working in related technical field.
- 10+ years of experience in a Business Development role, developing business opportunities in the fields of armor RDT&E with an emphasis on new technologies and/or Research and Development.
- Experience selling programs to commercial and industrial clients. Experience selling to senior management (senior executives, CTOs, CEOs).
- Client contacts in fields of air and/or ground vehicle armor RDT&E.
- Experience developing, marketing, and licensing intellectual property.
- Experience managing relationships with clients and alliance partners, including foreign and global business partners.
- Demonstrated ability to collaborate with research organizations to recognize and build business
- Ability to close deals with clients and make the sale.
- Ability to travel up to 50% of time - includes some foreign travel.
THE FOLLOWING IS DESIRED, BUT NOT REQUIRED TO BE CONSIDERED FOR THIS POSITION:
- Advanced degree in related scientific or engineering discipline.
- Advanced degree in business.
- Additional business development breadth in adjacent fields, such as explosives, mining, construction, and/or transportation.
- Comprehensive knowledge of the needs of both government and non-government clients regarding armor product and sourcing strategies, as well as funding and procurement processes.
- Experience interacting with senior government officials (SES, flag/general officers)
- Familiarity with export control requirements and compliance issues
