Demand Media is seeking an experienced Operations Manager to join its Business Intelligence (BI) team.  The ideal candidate is a highly motivated, detail-oriented team player with a passion for process, procedure and flawless execution.  As a member of the BI team, the Operations Manager critically monitors the BI Platform and ensures uptime, capacity, timeliness and data quality.  This is a technical position that combines both planning and policy decisions with hands-on execution, intervention and problem solving.  In addition to managing BI Platform operations, this position will also oversee release management and QA functions.  Along with planning/refining release management and QA programs, the position will subsequently hire resources to assist with program execution.   The candidate must have experience building a team, and managing and developing people.

 

Responsibilities:

  • Collaborate with business and BI leads on SLA requirements
  • Formalize methods and metrics for measuring operations
  • Establish operational policies, standards and procedures governing BI Platform execution
  • Conduct daily ops briefing covering operational readiness, delays, outages, etc.
  • Define ops management practices and tools requirements
  • Collaborate with BI Product and Engineering leads on building data quality and integrity checks into BI Platform processing architecture (e.g., data collection, feed management, ETL, Warehouse, OLTP, OLAP, reporting systems)
  • Work with IT, NetOps and data center leads on implementing system-wide monitoring tools, alert triggers, and escalation procedures
  • Collaborate with BI Product and Engineering leads on policies, tools and procedures for identifying, triaging and escalating problems and managing issues to concise resolution
  • Define and implement release management procedures for moving products from development through staging and production.
  • Develop QA programs consisting of software testing, integrity checking and defect/bug reporting for both staging and production environments
  • Consistently meet or exceed SLAs
  • Develop annual operating plan, manage budget, deliver on projects/initiatives

 

Requirements:

  • Seasoned Operations Management professional with specific expertise in BI Platforms and Data Warehousing
  • Outstanding commitment to operational excellence
  • Impressive background in managing BI operations with sizeable scale and complexity
  • Experience developing/negotiating SLAs, terms, conditions, measurement systems, etc.
  • Demonstrated (and quantifiable) success in achieving SLAs
  • Knowledge and foresight for building highly resilient and fault-tolerant data systems
  • Experience managing direct reports and developing people
  • Successful and productive relationships with business and engineering colleagues.
  • Exceptional organizational, project management, facilitation, analytics, presentation skills
  • 3-5 years hands-on experience managing BI Platform/Data Warehouse operations
  • 1-2 years experience as QA engineer, test analyst, or similar capacity
  • Experience managing BI Platform comprised of commercial web analytics, data warehouse, OLTP and OLAP technologies, such as Omniture/Visual Sciences, Informatica/Data Stage, Netezza,/Data Allegro, Oracle/SQL Server, MicroStrategy, Tibco/Tuxedo\
  • Specific experience with a top Internet Media, Network or eCommerce company preferred
  • Undergraduate degree required.  Ops Management, MCS, MBA or similar graduate degree preferred in process, data-intensive and analytical field, such as engineering, math, statistics, or operations.
