Commodity Manager (Global Machining)

About the Job

Ultra Clean Technology is a developer and supplier of critical subsystems for the semiconductor and capital equipment industry, focusing on gas delivery systems. We have an immediate need for an experienced Commodity Manager (Global Machining) in our growing Hayward, CA site.

Job Summary:

  • The main function of this role is to increase company margins by negotiating and driving down the costs of machined parts. This involves a thorough understanding of what makes up the specific commodities and how the components impact overall costs. In addition, the commodity manager must be the main point of contact for all supply chain related issues within their commodities and supply base. The commodity manager is responsible for negotiating and getting each of their commodity suppliers on contract terms that are favorable to UCT. This could involve but is not limited to cost reductions, lead-time reduction, supplier quality improvements, payment terms, long-term availability of product and so forth. In essence, the supply chain for the specific commodity belongs to the commodity manager and the commodity manager is responsible for negotiating the right product at the right price at the right time.

 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Develops, aligns and implements commodity management strategies
  • Uses commodity management strategies as the basis for cost reduction, margin improvement and overall supply chain management.
  • Negotiates and manages the maintenance of agreements with suppliers that provide the structure for all business relationships between UCT and the supply base (such as Global Supply Agreements (GSA), Non-Disclosure Agreements (NDA), Joint Development Agreements (JDA), Blanket Purchase Orders (BPO), etc).
  • Manages and fosters relationships with UCTs' supply base and drives resolution to conflicts.
  • Manages interfaces between UCT and the suppliers.
  • Engages with the Product Life Cycle process to ensure alignment with the commodity strategies and UCT’s domestic sites needs.
  • Directs new supplier introduction and/or disengagement requirements to/from the UCT supply base (assessments, financial viability, etc.).
  • Drives resolution to systemic supply chain issues affecting quality, cost, delivery or lead-time, which may include engagement with sub-tiers in the supply chain.
  • Develops and presents high level cost reduction opportunities to the UCT domestic sites for execution.
  • Delivers and manages Supplier Performance Improvement Plans
  • Drives formal supplier performance reviews.

 

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Extremely high level of knowledge of “machined parts” commodities and a thorough understanding of commodity management strategies for “machined parts”.
  • Knowledge of supply chain management, procurement, materials management, manufacturing processes, business fundamentals/finance
  • Advanced project/program management skills and abilities
  • Excellent problem solving skills
  • Ability to learn new technologies and manufacturing processes (aptitude/proficiency)
  • Ability to build and lead cross-functional teams
  • Strong matrix management abilities
  • Relationship building abilities
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including presentation skills, strong negotiation skills.

  

Educational/Certification Requirement:  

  • BS/BSE level degree in mechanical engineering, business, materials science, or related technical discipline (or equivalent knowledge may be considered)
  • MS level degree in business desirable

 

Experience Requirement:  

Work Experience: 8+ years directly related experience in machined parts or mechanical engineering

  • Previous work experience in commodity management (especially “machined parts” commodities), procurement, contracting, materials management, logistics, manufacturing, quality, account management
  • Certification by NAPM (National Association of Purchasing Management) and/or APICS (American Production and Inventory Control Society) a plus
