DEPARTMENT DESCRIPTION
The Scalable Computing Research and Development Department maintains expertise in many aspects of high-performance computing and computing fundamentals, enabling the department to conduct an integrated research program that addresses compelling research questions concerning the scalability, reliability, and security of current and future computer hardware and software. Particular areas of expertise include lightweight operating systems, performance-analysis tools, commodity cluster software stacks, storage, component architectures for scientific computing, nonlinear optimization, flexible frameworks for solving partial differential equations, and computational chemistry. Customers include the Department of Energy’s (DOE’s) Scientific Discovery through Advanced Computing Program, the Advanced Simulation and Computing Program under the DOE’s National Nuclear Security Administration, the Laboratory Directed Research and Development program, and other federal programs. The department’s work is performed in close partnership with other Sandia organizations.


JOB DESCRIPTION
The Scalable Computing R&D Department has multiple job openings for graduates in computer science or computational science and engineering disciplines to participate in the research, development, and deployment of hardware and software for a variety of programs in energy, basic science, and national security.  We seek candidates with experience or training in one or more of the following areas: operating system kernel development, device driver development, BIOS development, computer architecture, embedded systems, field-programmable gate array (FPGA) development, file system/storage, or other expertise working at the interface between hardware and software. Successful applicants are expected to work in multidisciplinary teams.


QUALIFICATIONS
Required qualifications include (1) an advanced degree (MS/PhD or equivalent) in computer science, computer engineering, electrical engineering, or a related engineering or science discipline (exceptional bachelor’s candidates may be considered); (2) strong academic standing; (3) software or hardware development experience and familiarity with engineering practices; (4) demonstrated initiative and the ability to solve problems, prioritize work, and make decisions; (5) excellent communication skills, including writing and formal briefings; and (6) the ability to work in a collaborative research environment.
Expertise in one or more of the following is desired: (1) UNIX programming skills with extensive development experience in the Linux kernel or a real-time embedded operating system; (2) Windows programming skills; (3) computer hardware architecture knowledge; (4) experience in software and firmware development on microcontroller and programmable-logic devices; (5) design and development experience for scientific applications; (6) VHDL or Verilog development experience; (7) FPGA development experience; and (8) programming experience in C, C++, and/or C#.


Candidate must be able to obtain a U.S. Department of Energy security clearance for this position. To obtain a security clearance, U.S. citizenship is required.
