Job Responsibilities
ViaSat's Quality Assurance Department requires inspection and auditing/surveillance services to monitor manufacturing and quality processes at our various contract manufacturer (CM)/ electronic manufacturing services (EMS) providers, and to approve  manufactured items completed and presented for ViaSat buyoff, including printed wiring assemblies (PWAs) and end unit box builds. 

Inspection Services
ViaSat uses IPC-A-610, Class 2 and Class 3 for all PWA acceptance criteria. Candidate should be formally trained to IPC-A-610 and have at least 3 years experience using this standard.  Ideally, candidate will possess a current IPC training certificate. Typical inspections will include a solder and general workmanship inspection to the requirements of IPC-A-610.  In addition, candidate will be asked to verify some components for proper identification by comparing component markings to the applicable Bill of Material. Proper component placement and polarity also needs to be verified. Candidate may also be asked to review AS9102 First Article Reports prepared by the CM.
·         Takes daily/weekly work assignments from Carlsbad Quality Management.
·         Represents ViaSat when interfacing with designated points of contact at 3rd party contract manufacturers and suppliers.
·         Inspects products presented by contract manufacturers for Source Inspection.
·         Compares the products with released engineering drawings, purchase orders and other contractual requirements as specified by operations.
·         Checks for quality workmanship according to published manufacturing standards, including J-STD-001, IPC-A-610, and IPC-A-600 and other standards as called out from time to time.
·         Suggests ways in which the quality of products could be improved.
·         Provides written reports of Source Inspection results to management.
·         Works independently most of the time, scheduling inspection activities largely around the availability of products to inspect, and the core operation hours of the contract manufacturers.
 
Quality Assurance Auditing and Surveillance Services
In addition to the above Inspection tasks, we would like the following Quality Auditing and Surveillance tasks to be accomplished, as required, to support ViaSat’s vendor approval and surveillance role at our CM/EMS partners:
 
·         Conducts Quality audits and surveys to recommend approval of new ViaSat suppliers and contract manufacturers. This is typically performed to validate ISO-9001 requirements, but may occasionally be for selected AS9100 requirements.
·         Performs vendor surveillance activities at various Contract Manufacturing sites including:
o         Survey/audit of new Suppliers to recommend approval to ViaSat Approved Supplier Listing (ASL).
o         Surveillance of the Quality and Manufacturing processes and monitors during production to ensure adherence to ViaSat and CM processes.
o         Working with vendors to improve product quality, based upon observations and recommendations for approval.
o         Initiating and addressing corrective and preventive actions when non-conformances are noted in ViaSat products or the processes used to produce ViaSat products.
·         May support CM Quality representatives at their suppliers or subcontractors to aide in the Quality investigation of BOM items needing Quality improvement or problem resolution.

Experience/Skills Required
QA inspector, with experience in FAI, SI, RI and other QA inspections of electronic, mechanical and electro-mechanical assemblies 8+ years or associates degree. Manufacturing or QA experience in electronics manufacturing. 5+ years. QA process experience with non-conforming material and MRB. 5 years. Vendor surveillance activities from initial Supplier evaluation and approval to initiating and following through with corrective and preventive actions. 5+ years. Geometric dimensioning and tolerancing. Experience with ASME Y14.5 3+ years. ISO-9001 procedures, MIL-STD-105 and C=0 acceptance sampling plans, plus QA and manufacturing practices. IPC-A-600 and 610 certification desired. Use of mechanical and optical measurement tools. Interpretation of engineering drawings for PWBs. Ability to interact and effectively communicate with management and technical staff on specific QA findings/requirements. Use of a personal computer and standard office/technical applications. Coordinate and conduct effective meetings with contract manufacturer staff and ViaSat personnel, in which technical results, observations, findings, recommendations and other data are communicated. Plan, organize and prioritize personal tasks, based on input from management and operations personnel. Work independently with minimal day-to-day supervision.
