POSITION SUMMARY:

 

The Controller for the Diocese of Yakima assures that the accounting practices, fiscal and property records, maintenance, and financial reports preparation for the diocese are in compliance with related federal, state, and local regulations and in accordance with the mission and norms of the local and universal Church.  The Controller is also responsible for the investment, operational and capital budgeting, financial planning and ten year financial forecastingand financing activities of the Diocese of Yakima. The Controller is also responsible for establishing financial policies and procedures for all components reporting to the Controller.  In addition, providing, updating and communicating thefinancial and construction policies and guidelines to the pastors, bookkeepers and parishes.Responsible and accountable for managing assigned staff.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:

 

  1. Oversees planning, implementation and evaluation of the office’s mission, programs and services as delegated by the Chief Finance Officer, in collaboration with the Bishop and Vicar for Episcopal Ministries.

 

  1. Assures the development, implementation, compliance and ongoing evaluation of a comprehensive fiscal control structure for all Diocesan Administration financial assets and those of related organizations.  Responsible for the development and maintenance of Accounting and internal control policies and procedures.

 

  1. Assures compliance with established accounting principles, internal control policies and procedures, tax law, and canon law.  Oversees the annual audit of the Diocesan Administration and preparation of the annual accounting reviews of the diocese and other entities.Prepares and presents information to the Audit Committee of the Finance Council at least twice a year.

 

 

 

  1. Responsible for selection, implementation, and efficient and appropriate use of computerized accounting programs to manage financial data for diocesan administration accounting records, the Annual Catholic Appeal, and Diocesan Administration. 

 

  1. In collaboration with the Chief Financial Officer and the Bishop oversees the Diocesan Administration Programmatic Budget including Diocesan Ministries for the biennium operating and capital budget process, financial forecasting, and monitors status of all Chancery budgets through monthly reporting.

 

  1. Assures effective stewardship of the Accounting Department through supervision of staff of accountants, and bookkeepers.

 

 

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

 

This position normally requires the physical demands of sitting, standing, walking, bending, lifting or performing other work requiring low physical exertion, talking, and hearing on a regular basis to perform the job requirements.  These physical demands are required up to 90% of the time.

 

NON-PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

 

1. Education:

  • Accounting degree is a must.  Other credentials in accounting will be considered i.e. Chartered Financial Accountant.  CPA with broad experience in non-profit industry is highly desirable.
  • Operational knowledge and significant useof the MAS 90 accounting system is a must in addition to Microsoft Windows Office, especially Excel.

 

      2.Experience:

  • Minimum 8-10years non-for-profit accounting experience.
  • Demonstrated successful leadership/management experience to include staff supervision, budget, and financial planning and policy management.
  • Demonstrated successful proficiency with computerized accounting systems.
  • Proficiency with computers, particularly Microsoft Excel, access, word and PowerPoint.
  • Experience in working with independent accounting firms for audits and financial reviews.
  • Experience in working withsenior management, board of directors, board committees and other leadership groups.

 

3.  Other Elements:

  • Commitment to and compatibility with themission and values of the Catholic Church in Central Washington.
  • Working knowledge of the Catholic Church in Central Washington with its parish/schools/institutions/Diocesan Administration organization and structures.
