2010 Corporate Relations Intern:
 
The Corporate Relations department oversees external public relations and internal communications on behalf of The Allstate Corporation. Functions in the department include communication strategy, public social responsibility (including corporate positioning, community relations and corporate contributions), media relations, government affairs, issues management, reputation leadership, The Allstate Foundation, shareholder communications, executive support, and employee and agency owner communications.
 
Corporate Relations plays a vital role in Allstate's success. We provide our leaders, our employees and our agency owners and their staffs with tools that help drive exceptional value for customers. We lead work that reassures our customers -- and those who someday will be customers -- that they are in Good Hands with Allstate. We help policymakers and regulators understand how we prepare and protect their constituents.
 
Corporate Relations is divided into four core teams:

  • Integrated Corporate Communications is comprised of Media Relations, Sales & Service Partnership, Issues Management, and the Regional team.

  • Reputation Leadership, CEO and Business Partnership is comprised of Reputation Leadership, CEO Business Partnership, Customer Experience, Protection Business Partnership, and Business and Shared Service Partnership team.

  • Public Social Responsibility & Enterprise Communication is comprised of The Allstate Foundation, Public Social Responsibility, and Enterprise Communication team.

  • Planning & Administration is comprised of Multi Media Studios, Financial Planning and Logistics and Talent Development Initiatives team.

Each team addresses a mix of "inward facing" (employees, agency owners and staff) and "outward facing" (external audiences) stakeholders. Our structure forces cross functional collaboration. The four core teams share joint accountability for achieving all items of the Corporate Relations Strategic Agenda for 2009:  
  • Increase number of positive stories and minimize number of negative stories about the company

  • Improve "hearts and minds" connection of agency owners and staff to Allstate

  • Strengthen line-of-sight for employees from strategy to their impact on business results

  • Embed Our Shared Vision into all communications and actions

  • Increase transparency into Allstate's business practices

 


Experience and Education:
  • Upper-level undergraduate students or graduate-level students with a minimum GPA of 3.0

  • Majoring in Public Relations, Communication or Journalism

  • Previous academic, extracurricular and/or work experience related to public relations is strongly preferred.

 

Interns will work on specific projects for one of the teams within the Corporate Relations Department.  You will work side by side with experienced professionals to translate your classroom knowledge into real-world challenges in a dynamic business environment. 
 
The individual will be responsible for:
  1. Completing writing assignments and communication projects for clients or external media/ stakeholders

  2. Preparing reports

  3. Conducting research

  4. Completing other communication activities as assigned

Skills:


  • Candidates should have a deep interest and understanding of public relations

  • Demonstrate good oral and excellent written communication skills

  • The ability to assume responsibility, prioritize their work and think creatively.
