Position Summary

The Curriculum and Assessment Specialist III in Mathematics is responsible for developing and refining test blueprints, items, scoring guides, and supplementary materials for statewide assessment programs. The Specialist will lead and facilitate advisory committee meetings, and will interpret and use statistics to select items. A primary aspect of the role will be to create and analyze test designs, conduct internal reviews and lead meetings with test developers to discuss and resolve issues. The Specialist will start up test development work associated with new contracts under minimal supervision and will mentor test development staff.NOTE: THIS POSITION MAY BE REMOTELY-BASED. Additional responsibilities include the following:

  • Consult with clients and project management staff to map out the test development components of new large-scale customized assessment contracts.
  • Create and refine multiple-choice, short-answer, constructed-response, and extended-response items aligned to standards.
  • Prepare item sets for committee meetings.
  • Facilitate and guide the work of advisory committees.
  • Item selection and test construction according to blueprint and test specifications.
  • Assist with development of assessment guides, brochures, and sample question packets.
  • Consult with chief readers during benchmarking.
  • Conduct internal reviews.
  • Create contract-specific test specifications.
  • Create and analyze test blueprints.
  • Provide feedback to freelancers.
  • Provide specific, item-level feedback to test developers.
  • Work with content managers to establish and monitor schedules.
  • Work with project managers on project-specific curriculum/assessment issues, with item writer coordinator/trainer manager, and with regional item writer groups on a per-contract basis.
  • Assure quality and adherence to specifications for all items for assigned contracts.
  • Create and conduct item-writing training workshops for a variety of audiences; address concerns of workshop members (clients and/or developers).
  • Understand and balance psychometric, political, policy and content consideration issues associated with individual contract development activities.
  • Use appropriate databases, e.g., IABS, IREF, BASIS to construct, track, edit and publish items.
  • Apply knowledge of standards-based practices; curriculum, instruction, and assessment to principal activities.
  • Ascertain and study current trends in national and professional groups’ content standards, as well as trends in how children and adults learn.
  • Serve as lead developer and train new content leads.
  • Coordinate agendas and provide uniformity of items during presentations.
  • Interpret standards for developers and freelancers.
  • Work with managing editors to coordinate schedules with the Publishing Department
  • Communicate project details to various departments within Testing Services.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree and a minimum of ten (10) years of combined classroom teaching and/or educational assessment experience, with at least seven (7) years in educational assessment. A master’s degree or PhD in an applicable discipline may be substituted for two (2) years of teaching experience.
