DB2 Database Administrator (2 positions)
Title: DB2 Database Administrator for IBM Series i – Senior
Summary: Responsible for assisting with the installation, setup, logical and physical database design, performance tuning and changes to databases in development, test, and production.
Responsibilities also include providing technical guidance and supporting the software development teams and System Administrators to troubleshoot and resolve database problems.
Relationships:
Internal - Reporting to Vice President Information Technology. Contact is daily via written and oral communications to provide updates on projects, estimates, completion dates on tasks, ask questions and receive necessary guidance.
Interacts closely with business analysts, developers, network administrators, system administrators and internal colleagues as needed.
External - Interact as needed with software suppliers and consulting organizations.
Business Impact: Directly impacts the ability of the organization to maintain its desired level of data and systems support.
Responsibilities:
•Database administration tasks including but not limited to setup of new databases and database objects. Manage database objects in the development, test, and production environments, index analysis, performance monitoring, maintain database logs and transaction log backups, perform database backup and restores.
•Day to day database maintenance tasks (Monitoring, Backups, space Management, resource utilization, capacity planning etc).
•Manage database environment to provide high availability and continuous operation as required
•Responsible for performing object migration between database environments, (e.g., Development, Test, Production).
•Testing of new releases and features for application, O/S and Database upgrade.
•Troubleshoot application level performance and optimize database/ application performance.
•Design/Implement database security. Create and maintain users/roles and assign privileges.
•Assist in developing Disaster Recovery and backup procedures along with the Business Continuity Team.
•Work closely with system administrators to assist with successful installation, upgrades, and patches.
•Cloning production databases for testing/ stress testing / patch management/ upgrades etc.
•Provide on-call support during non-business hours.
•Monitor and optimize system performance using index tuning, disk capacity management and optimization, and other methods
•Troubleshoot application level performance and optimize database/ application performance.
•Perform regular reviews of the database to identify performance problems
•SQL programming and providing guidance to developers on writing efficient SQL.
•Maintain logical and physical database model; ensure the necessary referential integrity constraints are in place.
•Participate in hardware, technology architecture & layout.
•Participate in the evaluation of the appropriate use of technologies, including hardware, utilities, purchased software and data access.
•Establish and enforce policies and procedures pertaining to database security, maintenance, and use.
•Take part in analysis and design sessions, provide technical feedback.
•Assist the Developers in reengineering the native IO to SQL IO
•Create and maintain data models and data dictionaries .
Job Requirements:
•Education - College graduate with Bachelors degree in Computer Science or related field with concentration in Information Systems/Sciences is preferred
•7+ years of iSeries experience is required, along with 7+ years of Database Administration experience on the IBM iSeries Platform. Knowledge of different iSeries query engines
•Experience with data modeling, logical and physical database design, internals, performance tuning, strong SQL programming skills as well as SQL tuning and analysis
•Experience with Data Warehousing including conceptual and practical applications is a plus
•Experience with Oracle, Microsoft SQL Server a plus
• IBM certification preferred
•Strong iSeries OS skills
•Good concepts on database architecture and internals
•A self-motivator that plans and manages time well; ability to manage and coordinate multiple projects concurrently
•Computer Proficiency: Adept at using computer office management tools—word processing, electronic mail, scheduling, spreadsheet, project management software, etc. as an integral part of day to day activity
•Working Conditions:
oSome travel - 5 to 10% is required at various times during the year
oOvertime is required on a routine basis to fulfill job expectations
