BRIEF: Genuine technical leadership role in the area of electrical critical facilities design that includes the full spectrum design department management from leadership as conceptual solutions developer and design engineer to project and program management. The job involves management of a team, client interface responsibilities, hiring and mentoring responsibilities. You will be joining the firm as a principal.

SUMMARY OF OBJECTIVE:The focus of this particular practice within the larger organization is the design of power systems for mission critical facilities such as data centers, central offices or network operating centers. You are an engineering leader with technical depth and imagination. We are often asked what the key point of differentiation between our firm’s engineering culture and that of most competitive firms and if forced to identify just one engineering cultural difference it would be reasonable to say that we do the work of thorough engineering for every client which means that we are not bent upon recycling our old work. We are engineers, and we sell that inventive and unbiased expertise.
Our firm is a large multinational firm staffed with talented and passionate people. We have been in the business a long time and with our success come stability and the access offered by our historic reputation and our ability to staff and finance huge projects. This segment of our business emphasizes the delivery of unique electrical engineering services, and we are increasingly selling those services by themselves, while continuing with the more traditional combined services formats (architectural, MEP, electrical, communication & systems integration).
We have offices all over the country and locations internationally, but we need help in the Baltimore Washington corridor that is focused on servicing the needs of a vast array of private commerce that has sprung up in the region and the needs of local and federal government along with the myriad agencies tied to the Federal system. There are always very challenging and often bleeding edge projects many of which are funded by tax dollars in the Balt-DC megalopolis and those government based funding sources help make business in that region strong and stable. It might be a good time to become the benefactor of the governmental spending that makes our job more a matter of meeting demands than fighting to locate the work.

PROJECT TARGETS
Mission critical work in our world includes the obvious data center market, but also includes all manner of highly reliable electrical systems required for NOCs, command control centers, call centers, surgical centers, high-tech manufacturing, large banking institutions, specialized laboratories, clean rooms and containments, specialized critical process (semiconductor, electronics manufacturing) defense installations and security operations, and fundamental government infrastructures. These unique applications result in lots of “out of the box” thinking that accompanies classic high reliability engineering. Part of this has to do with facilities size and part of it client vision for reliability, system status reporting and ease of maintenance. The essence is robust power services, medium voltage primary system designs, UPS systems, complex power transfer systems, SCADA, tough mechanical obstacles and critical human engineering/interface considerations. An intimate environment within a first tier firm characterizes our local office environment. We are a big firm (10,000 + internationally, 1,500 domestically). WHAT WE NEED FROM YOU
You are a registered professional electrical power engineer that has designed tier III and IV facilities. You have project management experience and can lead a team. You have the ability to be the designer, presenter and leader in executing the work.
The department is chartered to design very reliable electrical systems. Some will have dual utility feeds. Some will have redundant generation. Generally there will be sophisticated automatic transfer equipment, large capacity UPS systems, chunks of raised floor, serious cooling equipment, SCADA, controls and a well-designed failure response system. It is possible to see generation paralleling a utility grid for a very large facility.
Most of this takes place in a building or campus, and it is very helpful to have ordinary facilities distribution experience and even life safety, communications and electronic security experience because every facility has some of it and we do that mundane work along side of the exotic project elements. A project is smoother running and easier to manage and control if we keep a whole facility project (at least the electrical and mechanical) in the group and not parcel out the switches and lights because it is less exciting.
You have some experience with environmental considerations. Cooling and thermal rejection, the realm of the mechanical engineers, are synergistic elements in a critical power system. You are an expert in the considerations for and the design of failure response mechanisms. People seem to be the culprits bringing down critical facilities, and if you have experience managing HMI and guiding human response in these environments, that will help us.
Consulting engineering is a unique business. Your critical power systems expertise has to be very wide and reasonably deep, which means you have to know what you do not know, how to get to data you do not have on hand and extract precisely the correct elements of expertise you do not apply every day. We are not a facilities company or a construction company. Our products are studies, proposals, design and contract documents and drawings, RFP generation and contractor review and selection and support by way of construction administration and commissioning. We have a stunning commissioning team for critical facilities to support your efforts and clients.
You have participated in conceptual analysis and feasibility studies, and have produced all manner of contract documents. If we had to do the entire as-built set for a huge datacenter, the CAD department is doing that work, but all of us participate in day-to-day CAD markup activities (yes all the VPs can do CAD), and we need some CAD experience and the get it done what ever it takes spirit for those time where you need to have your personal hand in the mix.
