Job Ad Body:

The Web Communications Department seeks an individual with the ability to conceptualize, articulate and execute strategic communications direction for the web to fill its available position of Director of Web Communications. The Web Communications Department is responsible for creating and implementing the Universitys strategic communications direction on the web, adopting new media technologies and building collaborations to strengthen the universitys brand and messaging.

The Director of Web Communications is responsible for developing a forward thinking web communications strategy for the University. The Director must be a communications professional, capable of overseeing the editorial content of the Tufts.edu website, content development for multimedia and social media channels, the university-wide digital signage network and the development and adoption of new media technologies. Most recently this has included employing social media as a new communications channel, developing mobile applications, and finding new and innovative uses for RSS feeds. The Director also oversees the integrated news communication team in collaboration with the Director of Publications.

The Director of Web Communications must have a working knowledge of enterprise-level web-based applications including content management tools and calendars. The Director works with the departments content, technical development and project management teams (as well as partners with the University Information Technology Division) to provide advice on online marketing, website development, online applications and web initiatives that support and enhance the Universitys web strategy, including website templates, content management tools, multimedia, analytics, usability, information architecture. Other responsibilities include crisis communications planning, internal and external relationship building, policy development and budget planning.

Basic Requirements:

  • Bachelors' degree
  • A minimum of ten (10) years of progressively responsible experience in strategic communications planning on the web; excellent management/supervisory experience is required
  • Individual must have a working knowledge and understanding of website development, content management systems, testing, search engine optimization, usability and analytics
  • Proven track record of success in prioritizing and managing multiple projects, project forecasting and resource planning
  • Attention to detail, excellent organizational, verbal and written communications skills and knowledge of industry trends and new growth areas within the web communications field
  • Candidates must have experience conceptualizing, articulating and successfully implementing a communications strategy for the web, preferably in higher education; consistently achieving long and short term goals; and developing/maintaining strong working relationships with clients, partners and vendors

Preferred Qualifications:Experience in a news organization (print and online), an online marketing communications role or working with web-based application developers is highly desirable.
