Data Center Facilities/Hardware Manager
Serves as both the senior engineer and manager of the computer hardware in the data center environment. Plans and implements the layouts, implementation and maintenance of critical infrastructure that supports one or more technology centers in order to provide the maximum utilization of facilities and efficiency of production. Infrastructure elements include but are not limited to electrical (e.g., UPS modules, emergency generators, static transfer switches, critical electrical switchgear with associated supporting systems), mechanical (e.g., computer room air conditioning, low pressure systems, chill water piping, glycol systems, mechanical cooling pumps), fire protection (e.g., FM200, CO2 and Halon 1301 fire suppression systems, pre-action dry pipe sprinkler system), and the facilities command center for monitoring all critical supporting equipment and infrastructure. Manages all construction work involving any of the various trades in the critical environment. Develops specifications and prepares detailed estimates of design costs including equipment, installation, labor, materials, preparation, and other related costs. Forms criteria and performance specifications for critical infrastructure elements in technology centers and the equipment necessary to meet the unique operating requirements and building and safety codes. Manages the installation/de-installation and maintenance of data processing equipment (e.g., mainframes, printers, disk storage platforms, servers and network components, etc.). Plans, implements and manages vendor changes to the infrastructure and environment. Executes installation and maintenance efforts as specified in plans and documentation. Sets up and configures complex equipment configurations. Manages vendor intermediate-level testing. Analyzes the infrastructure capacity of installed equipment and makes recommendations based on results of analysis. Oversees various preventive maintenance and safety-related activities for equipment. Manages and coordinates the day-to-day building and space utilization activities (e.g., space allocation, building security, outage prevention). Monitors environmental and safety conditions, and takes appropriate action in the event of a problem or emergency. Creates and maintains disaster recovery plans for critical facilities and hardware. Defines and documents disaster recovery plan tasks and procedures. Identifies the critical components of the disaster recovery plan and how equipment changes will impact the plan. Modifies the plan to maintain it. Executes disaster recovery plans as necessary. Responsible for protecting the equipment and infrastructure elements and conducting an orderly shutdown before a disaster, conducting a damage assessment following a disaster, and rebuilding/repairing the site as needed and bringing the infrastructure and equipment back into a status that is operational for production processing. Requires excellent oral and written communication skills; solid problem-solving skills; and an in-depth knowledge of multiple infrastructure trades (e.g., electrical, mechanical, fire protection, etc.), multiple hardware technologies/architectures and disaster recovery. Also requires a solid working knowledge of data center environments and infrastructure. Requires excellent judgment and decision-making with regards to potential impact to computer and business operations. Requires high level interaction with security governance/auditing requirements. Performs senior administration duties for the Critical Facilities and Hardware team. Must be available for on call support 7 x 24 of the critical infrastructure and hardware. Work Experience: - 5 or more years of experience in the management, implementation and maintenance of hardware in critical data center environments. - 5 or more years of experience in the management, coordination and implementation of multiple trades (e.g., electrical, mechanical, fire protection) in critical data center and work environments. - 4 or more years of experience managing facilities engineering and/or data center hardware teams and projects. Education: - Bachelor's or Master's Degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Computer Science, Information Systems or other related discipline. Or equivalent work experience. - Hazardous Materials Technician certification or willingness to obtain/maintain the certification. - State Master License in Electrical or HVAC trade preferred but not required. Job Breadth: Middle level management. Works under general direction of senior level management. Typically manages and mentors supervisors, project leaders, technical/trades staff and/or contractors.
