Database Administrator (Data Warehouse Modeler)
Data Warehouse Modeler Job Description: The Data Warehouse Modeler (DWM) is responsible for transforming business information into models (conceptual, logical and physical) and managing the enterprise warehouse data model. This goes beyond the role of a typical application level "data modeler" in that it requires modeling from an "enterprise perspective" rather than from a single business function perspective. The DWM is proficient in industry standard techniques for process and data modeling. Within data modeling, the DWM must be proficient in both 3rd normal form relational and dimensional modeling. This person must be experienced in group facilitation with participants from diverse business functions and work skills. Responsibilities include modeling, designing, developing, implementing, and maintaining the data warehouse, data marts, staging areas and operational data store models; establishing policies and procedures pertaining to the management, security, maintenance, and use of the database management system; and training employees in database management and use. Job Responsibilities: Perform Business Requirement Analysis: » Interact with Business Analysts to obtain data and functional requirements » Interact with business users and find out the reporting needs » Conduct interviews, brain storming discussions with project team to get additional requirements » Gather accurate data by performing data and functional analysis. Perform Development of data models: » Create and document conceptual, logical and physical data models. » Communicate physical database designs to Data Warehouse Administrators. Reports: » Generate reports from data models. Review: » Review the data models with business and technical teams. Creation of database: » Create sql code from data model and co-ordinate with DBAs to create database. » Insure that see data models and databases are in synch. Support & Maintenance: » Assist developers, ETL, BI team and end users to understand the data model. » Maintain change log for each data model. » Establish and enforce overall modeling standards, guidelines, best practices, techniques and approaches. » Assist with the development of project estimates, plans, and schedules. » Communicate effectively with business and IT staff across functional departments » Maintain an in-depth knowledge of current and emerging methodologies, technologies and standards and provide direction to management and users » Evolves models to meet new and changing business requirements » Participate in data integration, information management programs and projects » Participate in tool evaluation and selection » Translate client user requirements into technical architecture vision and implementation plans. » Performs other duties, as assigned.
Job Requirements Required: - 8+ years of total IT experience - 2+ years experience with specific responsibility for modeling within data warehouse environments - Expert data modeling skills (i.e. conceptual, logical and physical model design, experience with Operation Data Stores, Enterprise Data warehouses and Data Marts) - Expert knowledge in SQL - Expert knowledge of relational and dimensional database design concepts - Good understanding of both database and system performance tuning - Good understanding of the Greenplum database, related utilities and tools - Familiarity with industry standard modeling tools, E/R Studio is a plus - Good understanding in Unix programming (Korn Shell, C Shell, Bourne Shell, etc.) and the underlying operating system - Good understanding of database security management - Good facilitation skills to engage subject matter experts - Good background in database design and lifecycle management - Knowledge of database loading methods - Knowledge of Greenplum Oracle database platforms - Knowledge of all phases of the system development life cycle - Strong problem resolution skills - Strong testing and debugging skills - Strong communication and interpersonal skills - Demonstrated ability to take ownership & responsibility for development and maintenance projects
