Design Engineering Manager ( Electrical Bias) - Chicago - Attractive salary and benefits package
A global organisation with over 30 years experience in the design testing and manufacturing of custom battery packs for major OEM's.
Our client has a strong preference for an "electrical engineer " to lead the design team.
Role: Responsibility for all products/ projects covering all mechanical, electro-mechanical and electrical aspects of a product under development.
This involves managing a “multi-disciplined”, “multicultural”, “multiple sited”, design team with a “hands on” approach, where sole design /project responsibility is also expected on one or more products/ projects outside of the design teams resource at any one time.
Hi - tech ( light electronics ) products are designed for full manufacturability from conception to volume production, meeting customer/ market requirements, sales and profit targets whilst promoting, exercising and enforcing guidelines, in quality and regulation requirements to keep it’s products at the cutting edge of technology and energy efficiency.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Responsible for team: Senior Design Engineers, Design Engineers & Drafting = 25
Responsible for Equipment: Project related documentation and records, Design office security, furniture, equipment and files, Prototype equipment, product and materials.
To supervise & investigate feasibility of numerous design concepts / decide between various design alternatives to arrive at an optimum balance between cost, manufacturability, safety, quality and reliability under environmental/ specification conditions.
Lead & supervise suitability of materials/ components with respect to function, specification, environmental, tooling, lead-times and manufacturing limitations
To be aware of and apply international safety standards to the products, avoiding potential health hazards and injury to manufacturing personnel, customer or end user.
To ensure unique and prototype parts are ordered and delivered to schedule. All documentation/ specifications are created and used to qualify these parts & manage test prototype components/ products / builds are fit for purpose.
Manage/ create the design and build of prototype & production jigs, fixtures, test and measurement equipment.
To ensure products/ projects meet agreed project miles stones, product/ customer requirements, taking and implementing corrective actions where necessary.
To supervise the study of, or study customer returns and field failures for deviations in performance and taking corrective design change actions where necessary
To produce design department budget plans, including annual software, hardware, training and travel estimates.
To produce product specifications, budgetary component costings, and budgetary tooling capacities.
To supervise or complete build/ engineering and feasibility reports / project ‘log books’, showing history of design decision steps and changes
To assist with vendor appraisal visits for establishing new subcontractors/ subcontractor processes
To manage daily all Senior Design Engineers/ Design Engineers/ Drafting, and/ or new recruits with responsibility for workload planning/ resource management, technical, project, and business direction/ decisions, employee development/ on the job training and performance evaluations.

10 – Current experience managing an engineering function – managing people, R&D project teams and new product development projects – with a career history showing good progression and a strong design background
10 – Experience of working and managing in a high tech, high volume, light industry, electro-mechanical products manufacturing environment, where strong project management is key
10 - Experience managing and developing multicultural teams in multiple sites ( US & China )
10 – Personality – hands-on, well-organised, strong planning detail and big-picture, accountable, team leader and team-player, influential, resilient, tenacious, change-oriented, well-organised multi-tasker, process-driven, with preference for action,
10 – Qualifications – degree in Electrical, Mechanical, or other relevant degrees

9 – Experience of working in the smart battery/charger product sector and comfortable working Face to face with high profile clients and products in this sector
