DIRECTOR OF ARCHITECTURE
Disney Interactive Media Group (DIMG) is the division of The Walt Disney Company responsible for the creation and delivery of Disney branded interactive entertainment and informational content across multiple platforms including online, mobile and video game consoles around the globe.
DIMG oversees several lines of business. Disney Interactive Studios, which has five internal game development studios around the world, self publishes and distributes a broad portfolio of multi-platform video games, mobile games and interactive entertainment worldwide. Disney Online produces Disney.com, the No. 1 kids entertainment and family community Web site, for multiple platforms including PCs and mobile phones, as well as the Disney Family Network of Web sites for moms. Additionally, Disney Online develops and publishes an industry leading suite of online virtual worlds for kids and families. JOB RESPONSIBILITIES
The Director of Software Architecture is a newly created role to oversee the architecture, design, evaluation and development of core technologies that support the WDPRO web and mobile properties. This role has responsibility for directing the Application Architecture and Advanced Projects technical teams. The Application Architecture team consists of front-end and back-end architects who design and engineer core components of our web and mid tier systems. The Advanced Projects technical team works on prototypes of innovative technologies for WDPRO, and also develops the groundbreaking experiences that connect in-park attractions with Internet users.
The Director will be responsible for the architecture vision and platform roadmap within WDPRO, and will be the primary liaison responsible for influencing the technical direction of the core back-end systems provided to WDPRO by the Disney Interactive Media Group and Parks & Resorts Information Technology organizations. Those systems include central guest registration, content management, booking/reservation systems and Customer Relationship Management systems.
The specific responsibilities of the position include:
Establishing the architecture vision and technical platform roadmap, and ensuring communication and buy-in from key stakeholders.
Leading the Application Architecture and Advanced Projects teams.
Driving architectural priorities and standards compliance into application development and infrastructure projects.
Working across the organization to improve system performance, and architecting the infrastructure necessary for monitoring and continuously improving website performance and uptime.
Influencing the technical design and roadmap for back-end systems provided by the Disney Interactive Media Group and Parks & Resorts Information Technology.
This position requires the ability to direct a variety of diverse – and sometimes conflicting – requests, priorities, and activities. Candidates will need mature management experience combined with the flexibility to interact with people at all levels, within WDPRO and across the Walt Disney Company.
QUALIFICATIONS FOR POSITION
Candidates should have a Master's Degree in Computer Science or related field (or equivalent experience). The candidate should have 8+ years experience in software architecture, design and/or development in large, complex Internet-facing organizations. Candidates must have at least 4 years of management experience with a proven track record of managing teams of technical people. Specific requirements for the position include:
Demonstrated experience of architecting and designing multi-tier, high availability and high performance software systems
Working knowledge of building content and commerce systems to support multiple brands, languages, delivery channels and devices
Understanding of Service Oriented Architectures, including SOAP and REST protocols
Extensive experience with PHP technologies, including frameworks such as Zend
Extensive experience with Java technologies and framework, including Spring and JBoss
Proficiency with Web technologies, including XHTML, Javascript, Ajax, XML
Understanding of Rich Internet Applications and related technologies, such as Flash, Flex, Air
Strong understanding of the role of caching technologies in distributed design
Understanding of standard networking protocols such as HTTP, TCPIP/UDP & Multicast.
Experience working with relational databases and content management systems
Background in Agile Software Development and an understanding of the Software Development Life Cycle (SDLC).
Working knowledge of how to evaluate performance and stability across distributed systems.
Experience dealing effectively with non-technical business stakeholders
Understanding of how to motivate and achieve ambitious goals
Knowledge of the travel industry is a plus but is not essential
