Position Description

Director, Consortium for Molecular Epidemiology, Genomics, Environment and Health (MEGEH)

MEGEH is a newly organized partnership across RTI that is dedicated to fostering collaborative effort in bioinformatic, genomic, proteomic, and molecular epidemiologic research. Formed in 2001, our goal is to build a network of research activities that capitalize on the breadth of knowledge and capability within the RTI community. Director, MEGEH, will create the environment to enhance and promote activities in transdisciplinary/translational research.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:
* Serve as the scientific and administrative leader for the Consortium for Molecular Epidemiology, Genomics, Environment and Health (MEGEH), a multi-disciplinary coalition of research scientists and programs from across RTI. Working with other members of the MEGEH leadership group, this individual will help set the scientific and strategic direction of the Consortium.
* Participate at the senior management level to better position RTI International in trans-disciplinary and translational research focused on the interaction of internal and external components of disease pathways.
* This position will have responsibility to work with the PIs and lead them to capture revenues related to the study of genomics or related areas and the development and implementation of methodologies for this purpose. Develop and nurture relationships with external investigators, organizations, and research sponsors to extend RTI capabilities to compete for and win research funding.
* Create and nurture the intellectual, cultural and financial environment to encourage and support the activities of MEGEH members and other committed staff in transdisciplinary/translational research, regulation and policy.
* The individual in this position is expected to lead research proposals and projects. It is anticipated that the Director of MEGEH will maintain an active research portfolio.
* This position will report to RTI's Executive Vice President for Discovery and Analytical Sciences (DAS), but will interact with staff throughout RTI's research groups (Social, Statistical, and Environmental Sciences, International Development Group, Engineering and Technology Unit, RTI Health-Solutions)

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:
* Effective interpersonal and leadership skills; ability to motivate and lead a transdisciplinary scientific staff ; ability to develop strategic plans to build/sustain a matrixed organization across RTI; strong team-building skills
* Excellent communication skills; ability to articulate complex concepts in a succinct and clear manner
* Strategic thinker with a good track record in program and fiscal management; ability to assess the competitive landscape and determine market opportunities and strategic directions best aligned with RTI capabilities and staff interests
* Well-connected in the scientific research community; have existing relationships with funding agencies and potential collaborators; ability to forge partnerships with other organizations as necessary to broaden our service offerings and expand our scientific range

MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:
* PhD or MD degree
* 15+ years of experience in a scientific or research domain
* Scientific credentials and reputation on transdisciplinary/translational research with awareness, experience and support for incorporating and/or advancing new approaches, models, technologies, for the overarching study of human health and the environment.
* Proven recognition as thought leader through invited speaker presentations, workshops, and news interviews
* Proven track record (funding history and publications in top tier journals) in transdisciplinary/translational research.
* Recognized leader in transdisciplinary/translational research through university affiliations, international exposure, editorial boards and chair positions, grant reviewer/chair of review boards, and/or board memberships for relevant companies.
* Experience in leading and serving as a champion for groups of senior scientists ***
