The primary responsibility and focus of the director is to support the mission and strategic objectives of Salem Health by providing vision and direction for Salem Health's Laboratory Services.  This includes clinical laboratory, pathology, and outreach services operating within various locations throughout the community. This person is responsible to ensure specimens are collected and processed timely and accurately, and results are shared with various care givers in a user friendly manner within established standards for response times.  Works in close collaboration with Pathology Medical Director to ensure laboratory outcomes are of highest clinical quality and consistent with all applicable regulatory and accreditation standards.  This position reports directly to the Sr. VP Operations Chief Financial Officer.

 

General responsibilities include:

  • Develop and implement strategies to maximize growth, efficiency and effectiveness of laboratory-related services that support the broader strategies of Salem Health.
  • Develop, implement, and evaluate policies, standards, educational services and programs that support the department in a manner that contributes to an excellent patient experience.
  • Develop, maintain and monitor measurements and trends of key indicators such as turn around times, patient satisfaction, and other indicators demonstrating quality and efficiency.
  • Ensure staff is effectively engaged in department operations through appropriate communication of expectations, timely performance feedback, inclusion in decisions affecting them, and by providing support that meets their needs in fulfilling assigned duties.
  • Responsible for the recruitment and retention of employees serving this function.
  • Prepare annual department budget (operations and capital) and monitor performance against approved budget.  Develop corrective action where appropriate.
  • Initiate activities to enhance revenues and support cost reduction and containment activities.
  • Ensure that employees understand and meet or exceed customer expectations and resolve patient satisfaction concerns in a timely manner, assuring they have been thoroughly addressed and appropriate action taken.
  • Works with other departments to provide for coordinated and effective relationships and processes throughout Salem Health.

Required Education and Experience:

Masters degree in a Healthcare related field required.

Minimum of (7) seven years of related experience with increasing responsibilities and scope.  

Experience with Laboratory Information Systems and Hospital Information Systems or comparable information systems required.
