Position Description:

Qualifications:

POSITION SUMMARY:
Provides scientific or engineering expertise and project management for investigation of new products or processes, or advancement of scientific understanding.

PRINCIPAL END RESULTS:
1.Participates in identifying and defining projects that support research programs.
2.Develops project plans.
3.Directs and coordinates the implementation of approved plans.
4.Provides personal technical input to projects.
5.Approves project reports and identifies new areas for investigation.
6.Assures the professional development of subordinates.
7.Develops proprietary technologies resulting in patents.

NATURE AND SCOPE:
The incumbent works within a framework of established policies and precedents as well as company research standards and practices. However, s/he is expected to exercise considerable latitude in directing projects once they have been agreed on. Supervisory review focuses on end results.

This position supervises 5-15 professionals and technicians. The incumbent and his/her subordinates normally specialize in a particular discipline area (e.g. surface chemistry, ceramic engineering). The incumbent may supervise more than one related specialty. Their work is normally focused on investigations within those specialties that may be addressing a particular product or process problems or an important segment of a broader research project.

The incumbent is expected to work closely with other research managers, individual technical personnel, and line management to assure the necessary focus, linkage, and transfer of technical effort to the business.

The incumbent provides personal technical problem solving to project work, as well as directing and coordinating the work of subordinates. S/he may also serve as specialist resource to others in the research organization, particularly in the area of the potential applicability of emerging technologies.

The project management role requires the incumbent to participate in developing research project and program budgets, to track progress against objectives, and authoritatively recommend changes in the thrust and priority of the work.

COMPETENCIES:
This position requires extensive background and experience in the theory and application of the discipline areas in a research environment that normally would be acquired through a Ph.D. with more than three years' experience or Master of Science Degree with more than five years extensive experience. It further requires skills in planning, analysis, and project management. A high level of human relation's skills to develop and motivate subordinates is also essential to interact effectively with the businesses.
