Director, Transportation Analytics & Design

General Summary:
Responsible for taking the transportation business unit to the next level of automation, across all segments of the team, by out of the box thinking, analysis and network design needs, and leadership of an analyst designated to deliver continuous process improvement for the Transportation Dept. Will work with internal and external resources to identify, cost justify, gain acceptance/approval on and successfully implement new processes, procedures, hardware, systems, etc to improve the delivery of, and reduce the cost of, shipping merchandise to the DC's & retail stores.  This position will also work to identify and manage growth, ensuring improvements and systems are available to meet the growth needs for the future.  Directs & develops the analyst team for future succession planning, while providing planning support at the strategic, operational, and tactical levels with a focus on expense management and service. 




Principal Duties & Responsibilities:


  1. Transportation Capacity Planning - Responsible to maintain and develop models depicting current and future DC & store delivery requirements,  using these projections, identify required changes in processes and equipment to meet the growth expectations. 

  2. Existing DC Support and Improvement - Responsible to support existing DC operations in the identification and development of new programs, systems, technologies, etc, and in the ongoing support of existing programs, etc. 

  3. Mode Planning- Leads effort on analysis with emphasis on all modes (includes ocean, dedicated, intermodal, Truckload, and LTL). Identifies opportunities and makes recommendations to each business unit.

  4. Asset & Maintenance Support and Improvement - Work with the Manager of DC Maintenance to provide technical/managerial guidance/assistance to Asset & Maintenance Manager to resolve and enhance processes, implement system upgrades, insure "common" maintenance issue solutions are being shared across the network, support develop/implement maintenance best practices and accountability programs, etc. 

  5. New DC Transportation Planning - Manage alongside DVP Supply chain;  the process to identify and select new sites for additional distribution centers to ensure transportation costs are included in these models.

  6. New DC Support- Responsible to lead the effort to identify and implement appropriate technologies and processes required to support new DC's.  Overall manager (budget and schedule) of all internal and external resources required to bring a new DC from planning to operations.

  7. Capital Budget Development and Implementation Oversight - Responsible to lead the effort to identify, cost justify and gain approval of new capital budget expenditures; and to insure budgeted expenditures are properly purchased and implemented; and to account for actual vs. planned return on investment results.

  8. Center of Excellence- Create a CoE comprised of high caliber members from Transportation, Distribution, IT, and consulting, used to harness process improvements, building business cases, defining Project Charters, Project plans and resource support for implementation to move the business forward.

  9. Supply Chain Oversight - Liaison with internal departments to identify upcoming changes within the business that might impact the Transportation network delivery model.

  10. Vendor Liaison - Responsible to maintain relationships with primary vendors and develop new relationships, so as to be able to resolve issues, identify industry trends, understand new  IT solutions, negotiate pricing, etc.

  11. IT Liaison - Liaison with IT with respect to Transportation systems and technology initiatives.

  12. Term Conversion Program - (Prepaid vs. Collect) Directs project with Merchandising to reduce expense.


Minimum Requirements:


 


Education: Bachelors or Masters Degree in Business, Logistics, or Industrial Engineering.

Experience:  8-10 plus years experience in Transportation and/or Logistics with 3-5 years Managing teams. 


Background: Experience in designing and implementing "big box" retail transportation networks including process design and network layout.  Complete understanding of inbound & outbound transportation: carriers, networks, rates, contracts, and system tools. 

Software: Knowledge of Transportation software programs such as OTM, Manugistics, or i2, using network modeling tools.  Strong computer skills in MS Excel, Access, Project, ESS Base, and the Internet.


Analytical: Logistics Analysis experience with the ability to analyze data and recommend solutions for improvements.


Communication:  Possess strong communication, negotiation, project management, interpersonal and problem resolution skills.
