GENERAL DESCRIPTION
Santa Rosa Junior College is seeking an individual with demonstrated management skills to join an outstanding team of managers and staff to provide high quality services to our District, our community, and most importantly to our students. This is a full-time, educational administrator position in the Computing Services Department of Santa Rosa Junior College. The Director of Computing Services, reports to the Superintendent/President and is responsible for providing leadership for all areas of network services, microcomputer standards, installation and maintenance, telecommunications, and administrative computing for the District. Appointments are contingent upon funding and Board approval.
The position is responsible for long-range planning, institutional systems software development, hardware purchase and support, development of campus infrastructure standards, project management, PC installation and maintenance, and ongoing staff infrastructure and wide area network training and support. The primary responsibility of the position is to provide management of the computing services function and the data and voice communication (phone switch) for the entire District.
DEPARTMENT DESCRIPTION
The Computing Services department is a group of network technicians, programmers, Internet service specialists, telecommunications specialists and three management team members. It is the responsibility of this group to provide hardware and software support for staff and faculty on the Santa Rosa and Petaluma campuses as well as the District’s various satellite locations.
SCOPE
The Director, Computing Services manages and coordinates planning and implementation efforts relevant to providing institutional administrative computing, network services, microcomputers and District telecommunication support. As related to the preceding, provides ongoing operational management of hardware and software resources, establishes policy, supervises staff and promotes cooperation and coordination within the District to ensure a high quality of service to all users. In consultation with Academic Computing, helps develop and establish standards for instructional computing. Approves purchases of equipment through leadership on the Institutional Technology Group (ITG), installs and maintains equipment. Serves as a resource person to the institution’s research and planning functions. Acts as a resource person to departments, committees and individuals with regard to computer related technologies, especially in matters of infrastructure.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Develops and maintains District-wide Computing Services Master Plan and strategies for computers, telecommunications, and information systems, along with recommendations for appropriate budget and staffing, thus providing a vision for the future of the institution’s administrative technology and information resources; designs and maintains the major District-wide databases, decision support systems, and information systems; designs, installs and operates the hardware and software infrastructure to support both management information systems and the instructional mission; develops, administers and maintains the District Internet, intranet and email services; in consultation with Academic Computing, creates an integrated vision for academic and administrative computing/networking initiatives, multimedia development, information services and information technology; supervises Computing Services including the recruitment, selection, training, assignment and evaluation of staff; supervises the Computing Services programming, telecommunications and network technology functions; administers Computing Services budgets for the institution including the management of administrative computing, phone switch and telecommunications equipment, maintenance and operational expenditures; in consultation with Academic Computing, leads the District-wide technology planning function including upgrades to existing computing and telecommunication systems and infrastructures; co-chairs the Institutional Technology Group and serves as a resource to the Institutional Planning Council, making appropriate recommendations; provides administrative supervision and leadership in the maintenance of technology equipment including working with vendors to ensure optimum performance and equipment availability; screens requests for computing related expenses by other institutional departments and operations; maintains an effective liaison with departmental and individual users in terms of systems development, maintenance and utilization; where necessary, provides the institution with informational reports to support its activities; supervises the preparation of state-required reports including the District’s Management Information System (MIS) submissions; continues to lead and participates in the activities of computing related consortia (such as the California Community Colleges Software Consortium - CCCSC) including software distribution, vendor discounts, the semi-annual meeting and an electronic newsletter; assists the President/Superintendent on institutional planning and institutional research projects; and performs other duties as assigned by the President/Superintendent.
COMPENSATION PACKAGE
Salary Range: $9,005 - $10,807 per month (2009/10 Management Salary Schedule); maximum initial placement at $9,907 (placement within this range based on experience as documented in application materials.) The salary stated above reflects a 3% mandatory time off reduction for the 2009/10 year. An additional 2% compensation will be added to the base salary for an earned doctorate degree.

Leave/Holiday time: Management employees earn 1 day of sick leave and 1.8333 days of vacation for each month worked. They are also entitled to holidays recognized by the District (14 holidays/year).
QUALIFICATIONS
Required Knowledge and Abilities:
Knowledge of state-of-the-art information systems application; computer systems and peripherals; programming languages; telecommunications and network technology support; educational data processing requirements; technology training; planning, budgeting and staffing.
Ability to supervise, evaluate and motivate the computing services staff; plan short and long-term computing and telecommunications strategies for an operation which is in transition and for an institution which is managing the transition in technologies; work well with a variety of users and vendors while representing the District’s interest; communicate clearly, both orally and in writing; and demonstrate sensitivity to, and respect for, a diverse population.
Required Education and Experience:
A Master’s degree AND one year of formal training, internship or leadership experience reasonably related to this assignment; OR the equivalent. Candidates must also qualify for a current SRJC discipline. Requires a sensitivity to, and understanding of, the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students.
Preferred:
Master’s degree in Computer Sciences, Information Technologies, or related field.
Previous management experience overseeing a complex infrastructure conversion to include several integrated systems.
Demonstrated managerial experience in administrative computing/information technology within an educational environment.
