The University of Southern Maine seeks a creative, resourceful and empathic individual to help grow USM’s development efforts.  The Development Director must be a strategic thinker, an experienced manager, a results-oriented team player who desires to lead a small number of development officers to support the strategic initiatives and mission of a dynamic, public university dedicated to creating Maine's future.

The Director of Development will report to the Vice President for University Advancement/President of the USM Foundation (USMF), and work closely with Deans and other University leaders, a team of Advancement professionals, University faculty, staff, alumni, and students, as well as committed volunteers who support USM.  He/she will be responsible for developing innovative strategies for annual and capital fund raising and executing these plans employing best practices, strategic marketing, and entrepreneurial effort.  The Director will help support and direct all aspects of donor relations, including cultivation, solicitation and stewardship, incorporating planned giving opportunities wherever appropriate, all with the goal of maximizing philanthropic support for USM.

He/She will manage a portfolio of friends, current donors and potential donors with a focus on major and leadership gift levels through direct solicitation independently or in conjunction with high-level administrators, USMF board members and other volunteers.  The Director will represent the University at various internal and external events and manage a small team of staff also focused on the mission of creating Maine's future.

QUALIFICATIONS:  Required:  Education/Experience:  Bachelor’s degree, combined with eight or more years of progressively responsible fundraising in higher education (or other closely related field) and management experience. Licenses:  Must have a valid driver’s license
