Director of Development

About the Job

NARAL Pro-Choice America seeks an exceptionally talented and dedicated executive as the Director for Development for this dynamic, mission-driven organization that has been at the forefront of the fight for reproductive rights since its founding in 1968. The Director of Development will lead the development efforts of this $15 million/year organization that is the political leader of the pro-choice movement.

For 40 years, NARAL Pro-Choice America has been the nation's leading advocate for privacy and a woman's right to choose. With more than one million members and supporters, NARAL Pro-Choice America is dedicated to building the base of pro-choice voters engaged in the political process to guarantee every woman the right to make personal decisions regarding the full range of reproductive choices.  These choices include preventing unintended pregnancy, bearing healthy children, and choosing legal abortion.

NARAL Pro-Choice America is leading the charge in an ever changing political landscape. In a country that grows increasingly diverse ethnically and racially, in a world that tweets, blogs, and friends, and in which younger generations no longer know the meaning of Roe v. Wade, NARAL Pro-Choice America is undertaking major initiatives internally and programmatically to embrace change, and to advance women’s reproductive health priorities with a new generation of voters, activists, and donors.

The Director of Development will be responsible for ensuring NARAL Pro-Choice America’s continued effectiveness by maintaining and ultimately growing financial resources to fulfill the organization’s ambitious and robust program goals. Leading a sophisticated and established Development team, the Director of Development will oversee an integrated development department that includes major donor, events, on-line and direct-mail membership program operations. Enhancing current efforts to sustain and strengthen NARAL Pro-Choice America’s relationships with its committed existing individual donors and launching creative initiatives to attract significant new prospects will be a priority.

An individual with superior fundraising, management, and strategic skills and possessing enthusiasm to apply these skills within a mission-driven, politically significant national organization will find exciting opportunities at NARAL Pro-Choice. With these opportunities come challenges: building resources to shepherd NARAL Pro-Choice America through this difficult economic environment, while keeping an eye clearly focused on future opportunities.

The next Director of Development will be an accomplished fundraiser with at least ten years' leadership experience, the demonstrated ability to manage a large and sophisticated department and work effectively in a team-oriented environment, professional experience in advocacy organizations, and a personal commitment to NARAL Pro-Choice America’s mission and goals. S/he must contribute to an atmosphere in which diversity is valued and supported. S/he will possess a demonstrated track record of building a fundraising program that surpasses current expectations and sets a higher bar for philanthropic revenue, both within the development function and across the entire organization. A collegial style, innovative approach, strong work ethic, proven management skills, and enthusiasm for building bridges between stakeholders are key.
