(These requirements are representative but not intended to be totally inclusive.)

  • RESPONSIBILITIES:   Develop and execute the overall global portfolio and supplier strategy for the life science categories.
  • Build the portfolio and ensure consistency globally.  This includes building and management of a robust Private Label portfolio as appropriate for the categories.
  • Define product opportunities/gaps and be responsible for new supplier development activities to add new products and categories, which will supplement the portfolio and drive profitable revenue growth.
  • In conjunction with senior sales management, manage the overall strategy, direction and focus of the commercially-focused application specialist team.  This includes, but is not limited to: range of products and applications on which to focus; oversight of training initiatives and requirements; involvement in and understanding of account profitability, call patterns, business reviews, customer or supplier issue resolution, etc.
  • Maintain awareness of industry and technology trends and the evolution of scientific applications involved and position RMD for success in those areas.  Identify opportunities and coordinate RMD capabilities for commercialization of new technologies as appropriate.  Examples here might include development of technical selling skills, bundling of technologies for focus on specific applications, and marketing and promotional efforts in those areas.
  • Establish strong relationships with the executive leadership of the top 10-20 global suppliers in the life science categories as the main point of contact for those suppliers globally.  Make decisions about the nature of the commercial relationship with those suppliers and be the main negotiator of long-term contracts and supply arrangements.
  • Work annually with the supplier base and the regional sales teams (both in and outside the US) during negotiations in order to secure the most advantageous position for the company regarding pricing, product delivery and supplier support for the products without compromising the company’s commitment to its clients.  Such negotiations take place with the ultimate eye on increasing profitability for the company or RMD.  Frequently such negotiations require considering trade-offs between multiple suppliers who manufacture similar product lines.  In addition, RMD customers expect that the product management teams are leveraging these supplier relationships in order to control cost increases.
  • Working with the commercial sales team, establish relationships with the executive leadership to the top 10-20 life science/biotech customer base to ensure our life science strategies (portfolio, sales strategies, services, etc.) meet the existing and emerging needs of our valued customers.
  • Regular travel is required to maintain solid business relationships with suppliers and customers, and to represent the company at industry events and tradeshows.  It is also necessary in order to lead the global efforts for the life science categories by interacting with the regional teams to develop and drive strategies.
  • Develop, implement, and update strategic and long-range business plans to drive execution.
  • Drive the business performance vs budgets and forecasts and other critical metrics and be ultimately responsible for the profit and loss of categories managed as well as for the application specialist team.  Report monthly on the state of the current financials as well as the progress of the current initiatives.
  • As the primary owner of key global supplier relationships, be heavily involved in joint operational improvement activities centered on increasing customer service and satisfaction via delivery performance and it is expected that future contracts with key suppliers will include strict service level agreements.

  • REQUIREMENTS:  Candidates must have a bachelors degree in business, operations, or a scientific field.  An advanced degree in business or science is also required, although equivalent professional experience would be acceptable.

  • Because the nature of the role includes negotiation and supplier management, the successful candidate will have previous experience in contract negotiations with detailed and complex terms in such areas as pricing, delivery, support and services.
