Job Summary:


Reporting directly to the chief information officer, this position will be responsible for developing and keeping current the overall network architecture of the college. This includes ensuring the following tasks are completed, either personally or through subordinate staff members.  


 


This position will direct and coordinate the activities of a technology staff, plus a number of students, engaged in applications support, desktop support, lab support, networking, telephony, Web, and media services. This position will be responsible for managing subordinate supervisors who supervise employees in several functional groups and for the overall direction, coordination, and evaluation of these groups. 


 


This position works with limited supervision and will work non-traditional hours including nights and weekends to include being on call 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.  


 


Minimum Qualifications:


Bachelor’s degree or five to seven years related experience and/or training; or any combination of experience, training and/or education which demonstrates potential for success in performing the essential duties of the position as listed above.   A minimum of 5 years of IT management experience in the past 10 years. 


 


Knowledge Required:




  • Application of efficiency and effectiveness measures in a "standards, benchmarks, and key results' management environment.


  • Comprehensive knowledge of college policies and procedures.


  • Knowledge of network, communications systems, data center operational support, desktop computing, Web services, and help desk management.


  • Knowledge of Microsoft and UNIX platforms, Windows Active Directory, MS Exchange, VoIP, and Cisco routers and switches.


  • Knowledge of performance tuning, capacity planning, systems management & networking on multiple computing platforms.


  • Knowledge of the principles and practices of leadership and team building.


  • Microsoft Office Professional and Project.  

 


Skills Required:




  • Willingness to work to fully implement the college's "standards, benchmarks, and key results" management paradigm in all decision making within the comprehensive community college environment.  


  • Excellent communications (written and oral) and documentation skills.

Examples of tasks (does not include all tasks that may be assigned):




  • Responsible for managing institutional communications utilizing a communications plan; services including service recovery activities and technical emergencies. Responsible for maintaining infrastructure to ensure provision of the highest possible availability of services in a higher education environment. 


  • Responsible for managing technology including, management of Jenzabar EX ERP, Unix/Windows Active Directory based LAN environment, Exchange/Outlook email system, wireless networks, network security, wide area network operations in a multi-site environment, desktop support services and IP telephony.


  • Supervise and review the performance of professional, technical staff and subordinate staff. Supervision includes training, delegation of work assignments, employee evaluation and discipline, and employee hire/termination, promotion and pay rate change recommendations.


  • Evaluate and recommend support policies and procedures for LAN, WAN, routers, switches, firewall, VPN, server system software and hardware systems, desktops, telephony and web hardware and connectivity.


  • Manage projects and activities through structured planning and oversight resources using MCC's official project planning tools. Make procurement recommendations for project management of systems implementations, to maintain networked systems and software.


  • Meet with a variety of users to determine quality of service, identify needs, and initiate service and operation improvements.


  • Maintain current knowledge of industry trends and standards. Adhere to college, federal and state administrative procedures, guidelines, initiatives and directives to ensure compliance with all relevant regulations affecting college operations.


  • Perform other tasks of a similar nature or level as assigned.

 


Physical Requirements and Potential Hazards:


Light Work: Light work involves lifting no more than 20 pounds at a time with frequent lifting or carrying of objects weighing up to 10 pounds. Even though the weight lifted may be very little, a job is in this category when it requires a good deal of walking or standing, or when it involves sitting most of the time with some pushing and pulling of arm or leg controls. To be considered capable of performing a full or wide range of light work, you must have the ability to do substantially all of these activities. If someone can do light work, we determine that he or she can also do sedentary work, unless there are additional limiting factors such as loss of fine dexterity or inability to sit for long periods of time.   May often be exposed to individuals who are hostile, angry or frustrated.
