ELECTRICAL CONSTRUCTION GENERAL SUPERINTENDENT: EXCEPTIONAL CAREER POSITION

About the Job

We need a genuine general superintendent that uses all of the proven management tools that make it possible to run big work under control, and a person that can direct, mentor a train an upcoming crew of field managers.

Here are a few things to consider when choosing an employer and career path in field management.

  • We have never had a layoff in construction. Impressive after more than 60 years.
  • We have the work charted out for the next decade. We can see nearly a billion dollars worth of it inked today.
  • We do a great deal of design and build and you will never get documentation of the quality we supply to support the field. Our layout, detail and CAD services team are hard-core field people that have learned CAD, not the other way around. Big jobs get field accountants as well.
  • We have the largest professional engineering team in the region as full time staff, which means you have direct access to them as you come across constructability issues or see avenues to reduce time and costs.
  • You will get your materials on time and you will get everything you requisition because we pay everybody on time, can buy from any source and can get anything and bond anything. We buy enough volume to get major manufacturers to build wire and cable to our specifications incorporating our designators, color codes or whatever we need.
  • We have teams for every purpose from true high voltage (like transmission and heavy substation) to a wide variety of technology systems integration programs (security, A/V, communications, life-safety, fire alarm).
  • We have a national warehouse, distribution and logistics system. Hundreds of thousands of square feet dedicated to these purposes.
  • We have the largest captive prefabrication shop in a private EC and it is staffed by professionals.
  • We tackle the most challenging electrical work in the United States. You will work on projects that are impressive by anyone’s definition.
  • We recognize the strong players on our staff and PAY for excellence. Our superintendents stay a lifetime with us.
  • You CAN work here in a progressive fashion for a lifetime.

You are a good electrical superintendent looking for a quality home. If you are capable, we handle significant technical electrical constructions and your skills will bring you more personal rewards, career refinement, and solid financial reward than you will find anywhere else.

You think like an owner or president, because when you take over a job as field supervision for us, you are the president. That project is a business enterprise the only difference between companies as the world generally defines them and the business you run is that your business (a project) has a specific start date and a projected completion date. From the start to the completion of this business called a project, you and the project manager are president and COO with full profit / loss responsibility. The heavy load is on the person running the field operations, the superintendent.

You are the kind of person that will always succeed because you simply keep moving forward. You can see the big picture and organize a relentless effort to process the work top down. We will provide the tools and backing of the kind you cannot get elsewhere, but in your past you have been the kind of person that succeeded no matter what, and quite frankly, you are going be a success whether the company is good or less than good. We are simply hoping that you would prefer to work in a system that backs you up and is the best you can choose.

Where we become meaningful to you is by providing all of the trained field, engineering support, systems, tools, finances, and administrative support necessary to take your personal expertise and drive and provide optimal circumstances and potential.  We certainly have the work. More than fifty years of distinguished service and strong financials coupled with unlimited bonding capacity and absolute market differentiation has helped us sign contracts that go out as far as a decade. We are a hundreds of million dollars sized operation annually.

What makes us different is that we are a true designer builder with a big electrical engineering capacity supporting the best field forces on the East Coast, and strength in diverse and recession proof sectors. The local engineering firms are not as well staffed as we are, and design/build with us offers economy, project success and schedule integrity that the traditional independent consulting engineering plus selected contractor team process can never provide. Design/build usually gives greater flexibility to the superintendent as well.

We have unbreakable ties to the local, state and Federal governments by history and by special clearances we have earned, and we are an invited vendor for much of what we do. Big commercial, big institutional, big industrial, traffic and even transit work are all sectors in our business along with the full low voltage and systems integration businesses.

We are privately owned and we are not a family business; the single owner has no partners or hidden investors. We control our destiny and that has allowed us to become a top electrical designer / constructor working nationally and internationally.

Our strategy has growth elements. The company has grown and we have done that by ordinary expansion and also by acquisition. That growth is strong enough and steady enough to allow every committed field manager in our organization to move up. Numerous superintendents have become project managers and some division managers and VPs here. If that is something you are considering for your career, it can be done working with us.

Coming to work here from any other business will require some adjustment and learning, and we have a system and process to prepare you for solo work on big jobs and to assume the leadership role for all of field management. You will train in our preconstruction division to see how we prepare for and assemble a job. With half a dozen single jobs running beyond $100 million in EC dollars EACH, it is easy to put you on a team on a big job and you will come to understand the need for the comprehensive documentation systems, reporting and financial controls we use.

Our estimation and project accounting process, along with field reporting and administrative processes are detailed, sophisticated, and you need to have these systems in place to build-out large jobs while maintaining control.  Our approach to every larger construction project includes modeling and pre-planning through completion. Big projects often launch with pre-engineered construction phases and detailed budgets coming from estimating. This planning is taking place before man one is on that site. You will participate in planning phases.

Large projects typically have dedicated layout-engineering staff, but your layout skills will be utilized on the site and are important to us. These specialty dedicated layout folks are electricians and past successful field hands who were CAD trained and who can take some really loose panel schedules and home runs and turn them into perfect plans for conduit pathways. Larger projects even have dedicated project accounting staff. When we roll out a design build, you will see fully scheduled, refined, debugged and construction detailed engineering documentation that is the most complete in the business. That makes your job easier.

It takes a defined level of monitoring, excellence in trades coordination and reporting to maintain control over large-scale long-term construction process and we have everything it takes in place presently. Companies that grow without putting these controls in place fail. We have seen plenty of the old giants fail and underneath all the other problems they had, it was lack of project and financial controls that brought them down.  Nobody runs a project under tighter control than we do and what we do is easy to learn and you will come to agree that all of it is perfectly sensible. As you go with our flow for a couple of months you will become a spokesperson for the quality of our systems.

REASONS TO CONDUCT A PRIVATE CONVERSATION WITH US

  • You can work a progressive career for a lifetime here, and will make good money across that career.
  • The work is diverse, challenging and even exciting more often than not.

  • Our past successes and old relationships continuously feed us prime work.
  • We have the strongest private engineering team in the business.

  • We have the work in hand signed as contracts for years to come.
  • We operate with a large cash reserve.
  • We have a well trained field.
  • Any qualified superintendent that is committed will make money here because there will always be big solid jobs to work.
  • We will allow you to advance to your greatest potential here, even if that means choosing a new career path with us.

WHAT IT IS LIKE HERE

We are an operationally driven company with very strong engineering support. The financial systems and administrative systems are excellent but operations earn the money and often helps us grab the next job by doing a great job and developing real relationships with the GCs and owners. We recognize that. If you want to call it a culture that is fine; ours is a culture of advance planning, super engineering and strong daily operational management of projects that are run hard, smart, lean and efficiently. We are in the business of just plan outsmarting and outperforming the competition.

Managing the heck out of projects requires superior engineering support, front row field superintendents, capable layout teams who can pre-optimize the work and handle complex coordination issues, well trained field electricians, and special support teams for larger projects that include project accountants and administrative support. We are that team.

We are an organization that supports people who reach out for us. Our division managers, project managers and superintendents do a large portion of the promotional and relationship development work. When our operational management team succeeds in these business development adventures, we pay them for that success. In one of the most competitive construction environments in the country, we retain all the managers we want to keep and part of that means that we have always rewarded them. People well treated and well compensated rarely leave.

Even with all of the systems and reporting, we are not micromanagers. We expect senior managers to do their jobs without riding them. You will be working side by side with smart, technically solid, friendly, tough and hard charging professionals. We try to make it easy for the clients to do business with us, and we try to make it easy to work with one another. We have great people on the team, and they can be fun to work with. The morale and camaraderie here is good enough that we find our managers hang out with one another as well.
