ELECTRICAL PROJECT CAD DETAIL ENGINEER

About the Job

The job at hand is the conversion of engineering drawings into fully detailed shop drawings. Our success has been providing our exceptional field operations team with installable digital drawings (3D where possible). We are going to deliver full building information models (total as-built drawings) as well.

WHO MIGHT FIT

  • To do this job you had electrical field construction history and CAD training.

CAREER ADVANTAGES AND FUTURE

  • Office environment
  • Mixed responsibilities (field survey, CAD engineering, operational interface and support.)
  • Upward mobility
  • Bleeding edge evolution of new technologies in BIM (building information modeling). This is the future; a fully coordinated 3D as-built facilities drawing set.

We are a top national electrical specialties designer builder that is successful because the field team is supplied with installable digital drawings. We are “the field team with the plan” and we are looking for you to join our specialized group of professionals supplying those plans.

Our business is cash positive, profitable every year for the past 50 +. We are respected, and progressive. The company provides a career path and we are a place that there will be job advancement and significant technical advancement and learning in your career if you apply yourself.

We are operationally refined, we use the cutting edge tools and this group will be leading the business as full 3D Building Information Modeling becomes a deliverable requirement and you need to be a part of that. We are contracted to deliver BIM information at this time.

THE BASIC RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Interpret engineering and architectural schematic drawings and produce CAD digital drawings for electrical constructions that can be INSTALLED, providing the greatest overall construction efficiency while meeting the applicable code(s). You will be optimizing the pathways for the conduit and perhaps refining the design if you have the insight and experience.
  • Support the field operations. You will review sites and work with the superintendents to resolve field issues and develop great solutions throughout the construction.

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:

  • You know electrical construction and you know how a job is built in the field. More often than not, you are or have been an electrician.
  • You have designed conduit layouts for significant electrical constructions.
  • You have a very good knowledge of the NEC.
  • You are a good and efficient CAD operator.  3D experience would help us but we will hire you with 2D skills and you will become 3D proficient working with us.

OVERVIEW:

We design and build electrical power and low voltage systems for large facilities and institutions. We are the engineering firm plus the construction company merged together and we also perform commissioning and it is all performed “in-house”. We routinely tackle work that can only be performed by a half dozen companies in the country, and we are awarded that kind of work because we have proven our ability to do the work for decades. We make money because we prepare before we build and run under control.

You may be an electrician, electrical designer, or CAD designer but you are a person that has a set of skills that can help lead a field team in designing the precise layout of the power systems conduit and can produce the CAD generated digital drawings to lead the team in the field. This job has been called a project engineer, detailer, layout engineer, and layout CAD engineer, but essentially you are person that knows field electrical construction or experienced electrical designer with good field experience and code knowledge that can review a site, architectural drawings and rough engineering drawings (or less) and turn all of that into a set of shop-drawings that can actually be built by a crew of electricians.  Your mission will be to produce installable digital documents for power systems in facilities. You are a good field designer, maybe even good enough to be a value engineer or design alternatives source.

We have a world class CAD layout team that came from all corners of the industry. What all of us have in common is that we have refined the art of looking at physical circumstances in a facility and reviewing one lines or crude contract documents with panel schedules and homeruns and we have historically turned those incomplete and often unbuildable inputs into installable field drawings that meet code requirements when built out. You will look at the physical facilities, architectural and other coordinated trade drawings, and find a way to get the conduit, raceway, cable trays and duct bank through the structures and obstacles posed by all the other trades as efficiently as possible, and can create a detailed CAD drawing(s) that we will build from.

What we offer you something unique. The company is an old, large and privately owned electrical engineering plus construction firm. We do more design / build work than anything else, and the work is very sophisticated. You will see bigger and more challenging jobs here than anywhere. We are an electrical construction company merged with a large engineering firm and we have worked a long time to make those teams work together. The competition is not operating at our level.

We have engineering departments for every electrical and low voltage system in the building or facility that carries power or signals. Because of the depth and wide variety of design capacity here, we are able to take a lot of the work we do as the prime contractor. This is actually important to you, your career security, mobility and your financial well being because all of this is related to picking the right company to work with. We are offering you a network of coworkers that include a genuine system of prominent engineers, designers, constructors and commissioning specialists the competition does not have. If a client needs all that we can offer, there is no real competition. This is what has helped us secure the good work, day after day, week after week and year after year. This business is as good a total capability as a client can put under contract to design and build a big facilities electrical, communications, security, and fire alarm system. We will always be committed to the learning, training and change it takes to stay in that leadership position.

There are other things that make us a good home for you. For more than half of a century the company has progressively grown. We are one of the larger US electrical design/construct firms, and we have grown through all the dips and economic weak times. We have done diverse government and public works projects for more than fifty years, and some of the signed contracts we hold now go out five and in some cases even ten years. Beyond federal facilities work we do industrial work, water, wastewater, traffic and transit, airport, large scale commercial, telecom, IT, medical and very special security systems work.

This (the CAD Detail Engineering Department) is a team and a business unit within the greater whole of the company. The manager here is really a “president” of the CAD detail design business. Because of the quality of our leader and the culture he created, life in our little business sector is good. The boss is a good natured, fair down to earth guy that came up through the trades. He listens, cares, he has a good sense of humor, a sense of life -work balance.

When you combine our financial stability with exceptional management and great design and controls systems, you have a powerful business competitor. This is a place that can be a working home for life. From our perspective, if you are a good and committed design professional we would like to employ you to the end of your career and if you can be promoted we will always make the effort to identify your advancements and give you the opportunity to raise your level of responsibilities. We will also pay you for those advancements and additional responsibility you carry.

You can count on our system. We are a private one-owner company which means we are not giving away the profits to investors or shareholders. We have an approachable and accessible owner. We are not a family business which means you will not be tripping over people who are related to one another and you can never get ahead of. We are loyal, respectful and committed, and you can retire from here and have done well all along the way.

DOING THE JOB

  • You will review physical sites, engineering drawings that may include architectural plans, mechanical plans, structural drawings, single line diagrams, riser diagrams, power and lighting plans, floor plans and construction documents submitted by our internal engineers and at times external engineering firms.
  • You will work on creating and optimizing conduit pathways, routings, attachment and connectivity and detailing installation elevations so that the power, communications and life-safety systems distributions are the shortest path, most direct path, and free of unnecessary bends and hardware.
  • You produce digital drawings using 2D and 3D CAD. The goal of your drawings is to direct the field team.
  • You will work with the CAD drafting department, superintendents, foremen and project management providing a flow of good shop drawings to keep the crews and the jobs moving.
  • You may be asked to attend coordination meetings and support negotiations for the best position possible situation for our team.
  • You may be called to the field to help tackle tough, unanticipated problems.

SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS

  • You are good at CAD. We use AutoDesk / AutoCAD, Revit  and MicroStation  systems. We are headed more and more towards 3D work so any 3D experience you have will help us.
  • You have good exposure to field electrical construction. The more you know the better. If you are an electrical superintendent that has become a CAD expert, that is a perfect combination for this position.
  • You have excellent print reading and interpretation skills.
  • You have knowledge about the use of the components and materials and the application of those components and materials.
  • You have National Electrical CODE knowledge. The more the better.
  • You have good mechanical aptitude and the knack for solving mechanical problems (the pathways). You have imagination.
  • You have basic computer skills beyond CAD for programs like Excel, and Word.
  • You have experience doing "redline" work.

Any additional electrical construction skills you have will increase your potential for growth and different assignments within the company and they are of interest to us so tell us about them. The more involved you were with the overall electrical construction in the past the better.

WORKING ENVIRONMENTS AND LOCATIONS

This is an 80% office position but you will be proximal to the job you are supporting so that you can survey the construction environment(s), attend coordination meetings, and work with the installation team. You may work at one of our permanent office locations, at times a site trailer, or at a desk on a site. We have divided the business into regions, this region servicing major constructions between the greater DC metro region and Baltimore. Call that a fifty mile radius around DC generally speaking. We have locations covering the Eastern Seaboard and into the South West. As you work with us, you will have opportunity to look at other locations if you wish.

To see if this works for your career you need the facts. We set up an external consultant to help you collect the data and answer your specific questions. Our outside consultant is an electrical professional that knows the job and the business. We hired a consultant to talk to you to eliminate the risk of privacy violation or exposing your job search. ALL COMMUNICATION WILL BE CONFIDENTIAL. If the discussion tells you this is not the job for you, none of your information at all will be moved forward.
