About the Job

We are seeking candidates who share our passion for excellence in copyediting and copy writing. Candidates with a high attention to detail, who can write compelling articles about the courses, programs, conferences and events that we offer and can get those articles published or land television or radio spots are encouraged to apply.

Responsibilities: Copy editing and copy writing for all print and online communication tools utilized by the marketing department; Review and copy edit print collateral developed by graphic designers and ensure that UMSL branding policies are followed; Write copy (when not provided) or edit copy provided by academic units to make communication tools more effective; Develop regular news releases about courses, programs, conferences and events for print and social media channels; Develop copy for online calendars of local web sites to reflect current offerings; Develop copy for existing monthly e-newsletter and for potential, department specific e-newsletters; Update web site copy to reflect current offerings; Manage relationships with print, television and radio channels and garner publicity opportunities for high profile events; Design ad hoc communication tools when art work is not needed, and when printing services are not required.

Qualifications: Bachelor’s degree in English, Journalism, or related area is required; 3 to 4 years in journalistic or public relations activities is required, including copy writing for print and online communication tools, copy editing for print and online communication tools, news release development for print and social media channels, monthly online calendar updates, feature story creation and web site content updates; Excellent people skills and the ability to relate well to all academic and staff levels are required; Excellent grammar, writing, and editing skills are required; Ability to manage several projects at once is required; Knowledge of printing procedures is required; Proficient desktop publishing skills required using InDesign, Quark or Illustrator; Proficient MS Office skills required; Experience using a Content Management System (ie: Joomla) to make front-end web site updates preferred.
