Job Summary |
The primary goals of the EAA director are as follows: ® Reach out to the medical community to educate on them on ALS and how the association can help patients that have been diagnosed. ® Promote awareness of ALS to the general community ® Lead advocacy efforts for the Chapter at the national and state and local levels of government ® Work closely with National ALS staff with federal programs and legislation. ® Serves as a staff leader and attends staff leader meetings as scheduled ® Reports directly to President and CEO

Primary Duties and Responsibilities |
Education ® Plan, implement, and evaluate ALS educational programs and/or services to the health-care community as necessary; determined by the goals of the Education and Awareness Program. § Conduct in-services to nursing homes and home-health agencies. § Presentations to allied health-care professionals at conferences and/or symposiums. § Prepare educational packets and general mailings to neurologists and primary care physicians who have contact with ALS patients. § Additional efforts for the rural areas. § Exhibit at statewide conferences hosted by health-care organizations when appropriate. § Prepare medical newsletter for mailing twice a year – ALSource. ® Develop, maintain and provide ALS educational materials to all staff members as requested. ® Develop, plan, and implement yearly educational symposium for the health-care community. ® Conduct ROI of each presentation or exhibit. ® Create, maintain, and manage Education budget within overall Chapter budget.
Awareness ® Promote awareness of the disease and services/organization through: § Presentations to community groups and service-related organizations. § Awareness to minority communities. § Identification and participation in community health fairs when appropriate. ® In collaboration with the national office and Chapter patient services staff, implement activities and programs for ALS Awareness month (May) and National Caregiver Month (November). ® Coordinate and produce the chapter newsletter (ALS Update) three times a year including a yearly volunteer edition. ® Oversee the management of the Extra Hands and Community Ambassadors programs ® Collaborate with the Patient Services Department and the Fundraising Department as to integrating an awareness component into events and activities. § Third party events. § ALS Awareness month. § National Caregiver month. § Walk to Defeat ALS § Annual Golf Tournament
Advocacy ® Coordinate public policy and advocacy efforts on the federal level as well as in Illinois and Missouri. § Attend Public Policy Conference and Advocacy Day in Washington, D.C. § Coordinate materials and attendance by staff, volunteers and patients § Implement public policy and advocacy efforts as defined by national office. § Reserve dates for Illinois and Missouri advocacy days (early Fall) § Determine state level issues in alliance with Kansas City and Chicago chapters § Coordinate materials and attendance by office staff, volunteers and patients § Work with state and federal legislators keeping them informed about ALS and issues of importance to ALS patients and caregivers § Research state senators and reps backgrounds ® Develop and disseminate information and material on advocacy to interested ALS parties. § Letter-writing, emails and calling, contacts to appropriate legislators. § Advocacy alerts and updates via e-mail. ® Responsible for responding to all advocacy requests including letters of support, testimonies ® Attend meetings for local and state coalitions to show ALS presence on important issues (Breakthrough Coalition, COCMA-MO, COCMA-IL, Respite Coalition, End Of Life Coalition, Madison County Networking) ® Create and maintain Chapter Advocate listings and email addresses, etc.

Other duties and Responsibilities |
® Work closely with the Vice President of Education, Awareness, and Advocacy to staff the Education, Awareness, and Advocacy Committee with qualified and interested community volunteers and or board members. ® Maintain budget for EA&A Department and conduct ROI for each program ® Attend Board Meetings. ® Represent The Association in the community at large. ® Give leadership and training to subordinate staff to achieve objectives ® Develops subordinates career paths and evaluates at least yearly ® Coaches monthly subordinate staff on goal attainment ® Monitor association web-site information as it pertains to EA&A ® Promote ALS Association events (Walks, Golf) when appropriate ® Other duties as assigned

Skills Required |
® Ability to communicate effectively with management, co-workers, and volunteers ® Microsoft Office skills (Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint, Outlook) ® Expert knowledge of PageMaker or other program used for newspaper layout ® Effective communication in oral and written presentations ® Ability to learn and develop queries on DonorPro ® Working knowledge of state and federal legislative systems

® College Education ® Additional continuing education or experience in non-profit management

Working Conditions |
® Work is performed in an office environment as well as a wide range of donor locations and facilities. ® Frequent travel to these locations is required ® The demands of the position often exceed normal working conditions. Company workloads may require work after hours or on weekends |
