About the Job
This position will report to the Publishing Director or VP of GMR Publishing and will be responsible for leading the business of one or two specialty groups of journals and related products and services in Health Sciences GMR publishing, with overall responsibility for business management and development, external relationship management, and strategic direction and leadership of the publishing team.
He/she will deliver strategy, business plans and realisation for the development, acquisition, maintenance and selling of information products and services (journals, electronic products etc.) within the international English language health sciences market encompassing approximately one or two specialty publishing groups taking into account the overall GMR strategic growth plan.
The key results area for the position is as follows:
1) Develop strategic direction
- develop growth strategies and long term business development plans for the assigned specialties
2) Business management:
- Meet or exceed annual budgets for revenue and gross profit. Meet or exceed long term growth targets.
- Input to the pricing, RF and budgeting processes.
- Ensure the smooth running of ongoing business management including implementation of content and quality strategy, cost control, publication to page budget, publication schedule, fulfillment, acquisition of society affiliations, negotiation of Editor and Society contracts, divestment or closure of unsuccessful products/services.
- Maintain an overview of the financial implications of all editorial/production activities
3) New business development
- Identify new market needs and business opportunities.
- Based on market requirements and in line with strategy, initiate, propose and develop new products and services, pursue acquisitions of journals (society and proprietary) or other relevant products/services, for new profitable business.
- Ensure that market-related achievements meet or exceed plans and targets: acquisitions of society and proprietary journals, start-ups of new journals, development of other new products and services, author input/page growth, online usage of journal content, impact factor growth.
4) Relationship management
- Establish, manage and maintain excellent contacts and networks with key external stakeholders in the relevant medical specialties, especially with Editors and society representatives, with a view to 1) understanding their professional and organizational needs; and 2) ongoing development of journals and other products or services, and/or acquisitions of society and proprietary journals. If appropriate for the assigned portfolio meet also with representatives of commercial organisations with a view to new product/service development and acquisition of content with commercial sales potential.
- Establish, manage and maintain excellent contacts with key stakeholders within the business
5) Leadership and People Management
- Provide direction, leadership and motivation in times of change
- Mentor and coach staff; support and manage staff career progression.
- Carry out the PDP (KPO setting and review, development discussions and action planning) and salary review processes and ensure consistency across the team
- Ensure that directly reporting staff with their own line management responsibilities comply with all of the above.
The ideal candidate will have experience within scientific / medical publishing and have experience working with professional associations. Demonstrated ability to manage and grow a journals publishing business (10+ journals), acquire and start new products or services including society-owned journals, and research and develop new business opportunities are required.
Bachelor or Masters Degree is preferred
