FCC Technology Group Leader within the FCC, Alkylation & Treating Development Group of UOP's Research & Development organization located in Des Plaines, IL.
The FCC Technology Group Leader manages the work processes and interactions between FCC Development, the Pilot Plant Testing Group (PPTG) and Analytical Services and leads experimental activities with a budgetary accountability of $3.25 MM. The candidate must have a through understanding of FCC process fundamentals, commercial unit operation, and knowledge of pilot plant operations. The Group Leader must have strong technical, organizational, problem solving and personnel interaction skills. The candidate must have the capability to respond rapidly to a changing work environment in which project prioritization and change management skills are required.
Position Responsibilities: 1) Safety:
- Manage HS&E activities to ensure the safe operation of all pilot plants and a safe working environment.
2) New Technology Delivery:
- Active member or leader of new technology delivery projects. This aspect of the job requires innovation and project management skills for the development of new mechanical and process design.
3) Management and mentorship of Career Development Program (CDP) Engineers, Interns & Co-ops. These personnel will effectively be reporting to this position:
- On-boarding (coordinate move requests, office assignments and provisioning).
- Provide work assignments and deadlines.
- Daily staff meetings (progress reviews, problem solving, schedule adjustments, data review, performance reviews for CDP Engineers, Interns and Co-Ops).
- Management of pilot plant report execution, technical content and archiving to ensure they are completed in a timely manner and per UOP standards. Review reports and release to Documentum.
- Mentorship of all Six Sigma projects related to the FCC pilot plants.
- Miscellaneous support for junior level engineers.
4) Management of Pilot Plant Project Definitions and Scheduling:
- Transform test requests from FCC senior technical personnel and other groups into pilot plant design bases.
- Assign and schedule pilot plant resources to accomplish the goals of the design bases.
- Manage pilot plant assets to keep them operating in support of assigned development projects.
5) Management of Pilot Plant Operations:
- Work with PPTG to ensure that pilot plant schedules are met and adequate resources are available.
- Make sure that quality and productivity metrics are current and correct.
- Work with PPTG and other parties to correct problems with quality and productivity.
- Ensure that pilot plants are ready for operations.
- Technical and administrative lead for the coordination and execution of modifications and maintenance for the pilot plants.
- Continued data analysis and technical innovation to improve the FCC Pilot Plant design and operation.
6) Communications:
- Manage information distribution of the FCC Alkylation & Treating Development Department. This is completed in part through coordination and execution of the bi-weekly staff meetings, distribution of project design bases, pilot plant schedules, pilot plant report progress summaries, monthly rolled up pilot plant activity reports.
- Ensure good communications and working relationships with PPTG, PPEG, shops and other interested parties.
- Bi-weekly updates on Departmental activities to the R&D Refining Conversion Group.
- Membership on Group Leaders Team.
7) Reaction Mix Test Coordination and Participation:
- Manage and execute field test activities to support technology delivery project.
Basic Candidate Qualifications: - Minimum B.S. in Chemical Engineering is required. A B.S. in Mechanical Engineering may be allowed if the other basic candidate criteria are met.
- Minimum of 6 years experience with refining technologies.
- Minimum of 4 years operating experience with FCC units.
- Ability to travel 10% annually.
- US work authorization.
- Knowledge of FCC heat balance and operations.
- Knowledge of FCC process calculations.
Additional Candidate Qualifications: - A minimum of 10 plus years professional experience with refining technologies is referred.
- Demonstrated capability to manage personnel.
- Strong trouble-shooting and problem resolution skills.
- Effective team leadership or participation.
- Knowledge of reaction kinetics and mixed phase fluidization are preferred, but not required.
