About the Job

The Financial Reporting Initiative (FRI) Program is a global Pfizer initiative tasked with the primary objective of delivering segmented balance sheet results in order to support the external reporting disclosures associated with Pfizer’s business units: Pfizer Essential Health and Pfizer Innovative Health, comprised of the legacy Global Innovative Pharma (GIP), Global Vaccines, Oncology and Consumer businesses. The initiative also generates the financial information necessary to support strategic decision making by segmenting and collecting financial statement data for the income statement and cash flow statement.  The FRI Program is transitioning from a project to a Center of Excellence (CoE) and this role will be based in the CoE.

The FRI CoE Senior Data Specialist will report to the FRI CoE Data Team Lead in Memphis and support the execution of program activities. The FRI CoE Senior Data Specialist will be responsible for carrying out workstream objectives which focus on Basis of Presentation Segmentation.

In order to support the global segmentation process, the FRI CoE Senior Data Specialist will collaborate cross-functionally within GFS and others, as necessary, to drive the timely creation of program deliverables, achieve program objectives, and ensure FRI responsibilities are fulfilled. This role will also require collaboration to support the on-going activities and initiatives of Pfizer as a whole in support of the OnePfizer mentality.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Obtain an understanding of segmentation methodologies to perform accurate segmentation, work with FRI Basis and Data Team Leads and leadership to adapt methodologies as necessary

  • Operational Transformation support including independently driving issue resolution, serving as first point of contact for escalations and reviewing analysis/work product prepared by support staff

  • Collect necessary data from Pfizer colleagues (GFS, Commercial Finance, Technical Accounting, etc.) to perform segmentation of accounts and prepare journal entries

  • Execute data queries utilizing both a relational database (SQL) and/or ETL tools (ie Alteryx)  

  • Perform maintenance for and troubleshoot issues that originate from a SQL database and/or ETL workflow tools 

  • Research and resolve discrepancies and complex issues as necessary

  • Link multiple sources of financial data – ERP data from SAP/Oracle with HFM data to produce reconciliation reports

  • Assist in carve-out preparation by providing raw source data as well as complex data analysis required for segmentation

  • Compile metrics and ad-hoc reports as requested

  • Review tasks prepared and completed by staff accountants

  • Maintain complete and accurate standard operating procedures and related internal control documentation

  • Maintain complete and accurate task lists and status of open items to prepare status updates as requested by management

  • Initiate tasks with little to no guidance or support and take initiative to understand complex problems

  • Participate in special projects and other initiatives that are in addition to existing role and responsibility

  • Identify issues proactively and communicate to management along with potential range of solutions

  • Identify and participate in the implementation of continuous improvement projects and monitor the impact on FRI to ensure methodologies and SOPs are updated accordingly

  • Seek opportunities to participate in site activities

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor degree in Statistics, Computer Science, Information Systems, Finance/Accounting or related field
  • CPA eligible preferred
  • 1+ years of relevant functional accounting or finance experience preferred
  • 4+ years of proven experience working with complicated data manipulation and data analysis.  Critical thinking and problem solving skills
  • Public accounting experience preferred

Technical Skills Required

  • Strong background  in SQL preferred (ability to code and troubleshoot stored procedures )
  • Experience with ETL tools such as Alteryx preferred.  If candidate does not possess background in Alteryx, must be willing to learn the tool quickly. 
  • Experience with SAP and HFM preferred

  • Proficiency in PC skills (Word, PowerPoint) required

  • Advanced Excel skills preferred

  • Experience with Tableau is a plus

  • Excellent oral, written, and overall communication skills

  • Strong analytical and critical thinking skills

  • Ability to informally mentor staff accountants

  • Ability to work independently, manage multiple priorities, and research and resolve problems

  • Strong business acumen and professionalism with the ability to interface effectively with all levels of management and operations colleagues in all applicable Pfizer Finance and business functional areas

  • Ability to perform and deliver in areas involving ambiguity
