Job Duties:
Direct supervision of the Shear Operator, Metal Grader (Road Man), Mobile Shear Operator, Grapple and Magnetic Crane Operators, and additional staff that operate the locomotive and the movement of rail cars on to and off of company property. Also responsible for quality of product and timely shipments to meet consumer's specifications.
The Ferrous Yard Supervisor is responsible for:
The appropriate training of Steel Yard Employees so that they can safety perform their job
The primary roadway leading to the Steel Yard including keeping it free of debris and oil
The Supervision of the Mobile Shear, Grapple, and Magnetic Crane operators and their activities throughout the work day to include: a) the placement of ferrous scrap at the appropriate location within the Steel Yard; b) the timely sorting and movement of the scrap by the crane operators; c) the timely shearing by the Mobile Shear Operator and the movement of the scrap to its appropriate location; d) the proper and appropriate handling of unacceptable and/or hazardous material brought onto the Steel Yard; e) the grappling and magging of yard dirt and its movement and disposal; f) proper weighing and recording of material transfer from the steel yard to the shredder; and g) scheduling of major maintenance activity of cranes assigned to the Steel Yard with the maintenance supervisor.
The Supervision of the Torchers and the cutting of plate, structural steel and wire to include: a) the timely placement and sorting of material to the torch field by the designated crane operator; b) the placement of the proper number of Torchers for the cutting of wire; and c) the ordering and supply of oxygen and gas for the Torchers.
The supervision of the inbound and outbound movement, switching, weighing and placement of rail cars to include: a) the operation of the car mover; b) the accurate recording of rail cars brought onto the yard and the delivery of that information to the Operations Manager or his designee; c) the timely weighing, switching and placement of the proper rail cars for loading or unloading of material; d) the scheduling of maintenance of all ferrous yard equipment with the Maintenance Supervisor.
The training and direct supervision of the Steel Yard Scale Operator to include: a) the proper and appropriate handling of unacceptable and/or hazardous material brought onto the Steel Yard; b) the proper identification of ferrous scrap and its proper placement on the Steel Yard; and c) the proper identification of scrap and its redirection to either the shredder or non-ferrous yards.
The training and direct supervision of additional steel yard employees used in various other tasks such as unloading of trailers for other departments, loading of trailers such as electric motors, and the indirect supervision of additional laborers on property.
Review all steel yard employees time cards weekly and ensure complete time cards are submitted as required to the Office Manager
Experience Required:
3+ years of supervisory experience
Education/Key Skills:
Bachelors Degree preferred or equivalent experience
