Job Summary:
Under minimal supervision as the company’s single point of contact in the region, the Technician III installs, cables, integrates, tests, programs, maintains and troubleshoots various fiber, microwave and copper networking and routing gear, including patch panels, DSX multiplexers (CAC), fiber multiplexers (Opti3, Force10/Turin), routers (Adtrans, NetVanta and Cisco) and point-to-point microwave radios (Ericsson, Ceragon) at multiple indoor and outdoor locations. The position works with TTM contractors for installation of microwave antennas and tower mounted radios and to “set the path” for the radio links. They also work with fiber carriers and end customers during circuit testing and acceptance.
Specific Responsibilities:
· Install turn-up, test and provision SONET, WDM, Microwave and Ethernet equipment in an optical fiber network adhering to manufacturer and engineering design.
· Configure equipment for network surveillance and supervision, including programming of IP addresses.
· Perform both hardware and software updates and/or changes to remote site equipment as necessary.
· Work with the Network Operations Center for final acceptance and testing of all newly installed equipment and rings. Tests to include validation of all provisioning, all alarm monitoring to the NMS (Network Management System), network switch protection, etc.
· Work with Fiber Optic, SONET, Microwave and Ethernet related test equipment.
· Maintain network equipment at a variety of terrestrial and wireless transmission locations.
· Immediately responds to critical and major service-affecting outages on a 24 x 7 basis.
· Perform all routine maintenance on site equipment to include batteries/rectifiers, HVAC, alarms, etc.
· Maintain vehicle, test equipment and tools.
· Maintain service documentation, logs, preventative maintenance records, trouble tickets and incident reports.
· Perform other duties as requested, such as working with local authorities, establishing local offices or warehouse facilities, site surveys etc.
· Installation and testing of circuits (DS1 to OC-192, Ethernet)
Education & Experience:
· High school diploma, GED or equivalent required.
· AA or Technical Associates degree desired.
· 5+ years telecommunications experience required, preferably working as a technician for a facilities based operator.
· Fiber based equipment installation and operations experience required.
· Experience with Microwave based equipment beneficial.
· Experience with Cisco and/or Netvanta routers beneficial.
Required Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
· Understanding of Oprical/SONET networks and their operation.
· Thorough understanding of circuit testing and equipment operation. (DS1, DS3, OC-N).
· Understanding of Microwave and/or digital transmission is desirable.
· Strong computer skills, IP networking knowledge desired. Familiarity with DS1 and DS3 test equipment.
· Understanding of Ethernet, IP addressing and subnets is beneficial.
· Excellent problem solving and equipment trouble shooting skills.
· Excellent oral and written communication skills.
· Ability to work independently.
· Participate in on-call rotation schedule.
· Valid driver’s license and able to pass required background checks.
· Extensive regional travel required.
Physical Requirements:
· Sitting (up to eight or more hours), keyboarding, some bending, reaching and lifting (under 50lbs.).
· Ability to work outdoors for hours at a time (some exposure to the elements).
