Fire Safety/Loss Control Engineer
JOB DESCRIPTION

Nuclear Faciliti in Southeastern Idaho has an immediate opening for an oversight Fire Protection/Safety Engineer (FSE).  The oversight engineer will:

  • Verify compliance with the roles and responsibilities outlined in a local Fire Protection Manual and government regulations.
  • Validate compliance with interpreting, applying and, when necessary, clarifying the applicable Fire Protection (FP), life safety and FP-related loss control requirements.
  • Provide independent oversight to the FP Program.
  • Provide final determination on applicability on FP standards, codes, and program requirements.
  • Concur with changes to local FP Manual.  Concur with all waiver and equivalency requests.
  • Concur with all Fire Hazard Analysis.


Job Requirements:
Bachelor's degree in Fire Safety Engineering from an accredited college or university and a minimum GPA of 3.2 is preferred.

The FSE shall be a qualified fire protection/safety engineer with a Professional Engineering (PE) license.  Five years experience.  Qualifications that meet the requirements of DOE Std. 1137-2007 (Fire Protection Engineering Functional Area Qualification Standard) and licensed PE in the State of Idaho are preferred alternatives.  Excellent written, verbal and interpersonal communication skills are required.

ABOUT THE COMPANY
For more than 60 years the Bettis Laboratory has developed advanced Naval nuclear propulsion technology and provided technical support during the construction, operation, and maintenance of Naval nuclear propulsion plants. Bettis designed reactor plants for the first nuclear-powered submarines (USS NAUTILUS) and aircraft carrier (USS ENTERPRISE), all of the Nimitz class aircraft carriers, and the USS SEAWOLF. A major initiative for the Laboratory is the design of nuclear-powered propulsion plants and electrical power systems for the next class of U.S. Navy aircraft carriers. The Laboratory's main sites are located in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and Idaho Falls, Idaho. Other locations include Charleston, South Carolina, and shipyards located in Groton, Connecticut and Newport News, Virginia. The Bettis Laboratory is operated for the Department of Energy by Bechtel Marine Propulsion Corporation.

Bettis' responsibilities for nuclear propulsion include research and development, design, testing, training, new construction and operational support, and the examination and disposal of expended reactors. This "cradle-to-grave" responsibility provides the opportunity for diverse and challenging work assignments.
