Overview: Provide assistance to dental students, patients, faculty and staff in the Dental School and off-site locations and provide instruction as appropriate to dental students and patients. Also to serve as back-up to Group Coordinator as needed.
Essential Functions: Provide dental assistance to dental students and faculty during the examination and treatment of patients, provide assistance to patients, faculty and staff in the Dental School and off-site locations.
Duties and Responsibilities: Provide dental assistance to students during the examination and treatment of patients including: monitoring patient comfort; instructing students in four-handed dentistry; and assuring that clinic procedures are followed. Travel to off-site locations to provide dental assistance if needed.
Provide back-up to group coordinators as needed. Duties to include, but not limited to: answer phones, schedule appointments, handle patient records and provide assistance to patients as appropriate.
Assist dental students and faculty in the processing of paperwork related to the examination and teatment of patients. Maintain and monitor cleanliness of dental equipment and instruments per OSHA guidelines. Become familiar with the new techniques and equipment as required in the clinic. Provide orientation to dental students new to the department. Attend in-service programs and various meetings as required. Perform any and all related duties as required or assigned.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: High School education plus one year dental assistant experience required including knowledge of dental terminology and anatomy; regulator agency requirements; 4-handed dentistry; instrumentation; impression materials and cements; x-ray technology and procedures; sterilization procedures; patient management techniques; and Health-Care Provider CPR. Also requires dexterity, ability to tolerate long periods of bending, standing and walking, strong verbal and written communication skills as well as basic computer skills, excellent customer service and listening skills, discretion, flexibility, ability to work and communicate with people from a diverse population; and the ability to work independently with little supervision and constant interruptions in an environment that can be stressful. Previous experience working in an academic setting and knowledge of Marquette University School of Dentistry policy and procedures helpful.
