A project is available in the Research Participation Program at the Center for Food Safety and Applied Nutrition (CFSAN), U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). The appointee will be assigned to the Emergency Coordination and Response Team in College Park, Maryland.
Description of Project:
Planning, training, and response to foodborne emergencies and electronic information organization of CFSAN-related foodborne emergencies
Each year there are numerous foodborne illness outbreaks and other emergency events associated with products regulated by FDA, CFSAN. CFSAN provides scientific, policy, and regulatory guidance to FDA in response to a contamination of a food or cosmetic. This position involves coordinating CFSAN’s response with the FDA's Office of Crisis Management (OCM), FDA's Office of Regulatory Affairs (ORA), the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and other government partners in foodborne outbreaks and other emergency activities involving food, dietary supplement products and cosmetics regulated by FDA. In tracking emergency incidents, information from the incident coming from various sources electronically. It is critical to managing the Center’s response to have the most pertinent and up-to-date information and data on each emergency that is being tracked and organized in a manner that risk managers can make the best public health decisions.
This work involves assisting in communication and coordination with various scientific, information technology, and policy officials. 2nd shift (2:00 pm to 10:30 pm) will be required (hours may be flexible with the shift depending on type of emergency, outbreak or recall).
In order to be prepared to respond to emergencies, CFSAN has an emergency response training program and maintains an emergency response plan. This project involves activities related to the Center’s emergency preparedness and training efforts. This project involves communication and coordination with various scientific, regulatory, and policy officials.

The fellow should ideally have a masters of public health or masters of science degree with a major in microbiology, food science, or another appropriate field. Candidates with a bachelor’s degree in a related science with the technical expertise and experience necessary for the performance of the tasks will also be considered. The project requires knowledge of the principles and practices of emergency preparedness and response and food safety with a sufficient understanding of epidemiology, microbiology and environmental investigations to allow the fellow to interpret results with respect to FDA involvement and response, and to some level information technology. The individual must be able to maintain and execute emergency response plans and related training programs. The individual will provide updated versions to the Center Emergency Response Plan and training materials as well as outbreak investigation summary reports. In order to be able to report results to FDA, the individual must possess excellent skills for preparing written documents and in giving oral presentations. In addition, the individual must have successful practical experience working on and with multi-disciplinary teams. Some travel by the individual may be required. U.S. citizenship or lawful permanent resident status is preferred, but an applicant can also hold an appropriate visa status, however, an H1B visa is not appropriate.
The appointment is for up to one year and may be renewed for a second year upon recommendation of CFSAN and subject to availability of funds. The participant will receive an annual stipend of up to $73,100 depending on background and experience, with increase in salary for second year. Limited inbound travel/moving expenses will be reimbursed. Funds are also available for travel to scientific meetings. The participant must show proof of health and medical insurance (insurance available through the program.) The appointment is full time at CFSAN in College Park, Maryland.
