A leading Gulf-South Company with interests in stevedoring, terminal operations and warehousing throughout the Gulf Region is seeking a General Manager.


 


 


General Job Description:


 



  • Chief administrative officer of all stevedoring, terminal operations and freezer operations.

  • Responsible for overseeing the operational, financial and legal affairs of the division and the operational management and maintenance of the division assets (equipment, vehicles, and office equipment).

  • Provides leadership to assist staff managers in functioning as a team, and maintains a productive, cost-effective, safe and legal workplace.

  • Follows guidelines and policies set forth by our executive committee and reports directly to the vice-president of operations for the company.

 


 


Specific Duties:


 




  • Organizational Management


    • Administer corporate affairs in accordance with organizational policies.

    • Ensure the maintenance of official records, by-laws, and standing rules according to company policy and legal counsel.

    • Attend General Manager/Safety quarterly meetings and provide operation efficiencies that are implanted within a division.  Provide feedback to operational management staff of meeting discussions.

    • Proactively provide information of productions, safety efficiencies and budgetary numbers to Executive Committee in conjunction with staff operational managers.

    • Advise the Executive Committee when legal counsel is needed and coordinate legal resources through The Jackson Kearney Group legal counsel.

  • Planning Administration


    • Provide leadership and vision to the organization by assisting the staff with the development of long range and annual plans, and with the evaluation and progress on plans/goals.

    • Conduct weekly operational management meeting to discuss company policy and operational issues as well as efficiency.

    • Prepare annual projected budgetary profits, equipment replacement, as well as, additional assets needed in the divisional operations.

    • Review profit and losses (P&L) statement on a monthly basis to determine if division is within annual budgets.  Report deficiencies and explanations on the P&L’s to Vice President of Operations and/or Chief Operating Officer.  

  • External Relations Administration


    • Oversee relations with the managers in the division.

    • Appoint staff member to represent divisions in operational meetings when General Manager is not present.

    • Continuous relationship with USDA and State inspectors on daily activities as well as the exportation of goods.

    • Continuous relationship with customers.

    • Conduct a minimum of two sales calls per week with customers, agents, and related industry companies.  

    • Able to bid project and stevedore quotes.

    • Able to read engineer drawings. 

  • Staff Administration


    • Develop annual plan and goals for staffing the division workplace.

    • Hire, supervise, evaluate and; if necessary dismiss staff members as specified in the standing rules and company policy

    • Oversee workplace operations including, conducting staff meetings and working with staff to maintain and improve effectiveness and efficiency.

    • Ensure that all staff members receive appropriate training to perform their jobs effectively.

    • Revise staff job descriptions when necessary to increase efficiency and achievement of the organization’s goals, with input from staff and other appropriate resources.

    • Oversee administration of staff benefits through the Human Resource department.

    • Oversee that maintenance of personnel and other administrative records are submitted to Human Resources in a timely manner.

    • Responsible for collections from 60-90 days 

  • Workplace Administration


    • Administer the affairs of the workplace in accordance with Coastal Cargo policies and labor contracts (Union) and all applicable laws.

    • Promote effective communication on all levels on the organization.

    • Ensure that the functions and needs of the workplace are understood by the leadership of the division.

    • Act as arbitrator/mediator in work and personnel/personal disputes.

    • Oversee the following operations managers and supervisors:


      • Operations Manager

      • Office Manager

      • Corporate Equipment Manager

      • Terminal Manager

      • Operations Coordinators

      • Customer Service Supervisor

 


Experience Required:



  • Minimum of 5 years experience in Business Management, planning, financial oversight and operations.

  • Minimum of 5 years experience in personnel management; including, hiring, supervision, evaluations and benefits administration.

  • College Graduate or equivalent experience.

  • Minimum 5 years experience in stevedore/terminal operations.

  • Minimum 5 years experience in Freezer Operations.

  • Experience in USDA requirements for storage, export, regulations and documentation.

  • Excellent interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills.

  • Demonstrated ability to multi-task and work in a fast paced environment.

  • Ability to cope with conflict, stress and crisis situations.

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Outlook, Office, and PowerPoint. AS400 experience a plus.

  • Full understanding of operations of stevedoring, terminal services and freezer operations.

  • Carry out other duties as directed
