We are seeking candidates that possess strong modeling skills and have a solid background in one or more disciplines including, for example, biology, ecology, microbiology, environmental chemistry, environmental engineering, or soil science. The successful candidate will assist in the development and implementation of a wide variety of risk assessment models used in predicting the potential for adverse health and ecological effects associated with chemical and microbial agents to which humans and animals are exposed. Work activities will involve all aspects of risk assessment, from the initial definition of the problem statement through the characterization of uncertainty and variability in the modeling results. The candidate will work with a multi-disciplinary team of scientists, modelers, programmers, and risk assessors on different types of risk assessment problems including, for example, risk assessment of pollutants released during the land application of industrial byproducts and biosolids, to the risk assessment of microbial and chemical agents that contaminate the food supply chain.
The candidate will be integrated into a multi-disciplinary team and, specifically, work closely with a senior risk assessment mentor. The candidate will have significant opportunities to develop technical skills in modeling and risk assessment and, ultimately, to grow into technical and project leadership roles. The successful candidate will be expected to contribute to publications and potentially to attend scientific conferences to present our work.
Qualifications
* Undergraduate degree in fields related to science or engineering
* Experience in modeling environmental and/or ecological systems.
* Demonstrated writing skills
* Experience working with spreadsheet and database software packages such as MS Access.
* Strong quantitative skills
* Familiarity with creating and executing models
* Some background in environmental science/engineering or the health sciences. Experience in programming (e.g., Java, .net) and running model simulations is definitely a plus.
