Public Health Sanitarians (Health Inspectors) travel throughout the five boroughs of New York City to ensure compliance with regulations relating to the environment and conduct inspections of food service establishments (restaurants), mobile food carts, day camps, shelters, single room occupancy dwellings, pools, saunas, prisons, schools, senior centers, soup kitchens and apartments in multiple dwelling buildings.
The window guard law and day camp regulations continue to decrease the amount of illnesses and injuries among children. The food protection and safety program is unparalleled and has an incentive plan in place that recognizes food establishments with an exemplary food safety program.
Health Inspectors also seek compliance with laws and regulations through inspections that aim at controlling and preventing chronic diseases. These groundbreaking laws that protect the public’s health – this includes the Smoke-Free Air Act which eliminated smoking and second-hand smoke in all public places; the banning of trans fats in NYC food facilities and the mandating of calorie information being displayed in restaurants to prevent and reduce heart disease and obesity in New York City. You will be equipped with the most up-to-date technical equipment; including handheld computers to conduct inspections and investigations.
All candidates must have a baccalaureate degree with 30 credits in the biological and/or physical sciences OR an associate degree with 12 credits in the biological and/or physical sciences, and 5 years of experience as a public health technician assisting sanitarians and engineers in carrying out the various elements of prevention and control programs affecting the public's health.
