Job Summary:  Provide accurate case identification, advanced laboratory testing, which includes confirmation and relatedness, as well as testing to evaluate the changing epidemiology of disease for a number of VPDs.  The purpose of this project is to carry out critical needs identified within CDC and related to the intent of ARRA funding. 


Assess the needs of the public laboratories as they relate to laboratory testing for VPDs, identify training and proficiency testing that can be performed to meet those needs, and subsequently to evaluate the results.  Advanced laboratory testing at the state level, such as systematic and accurate serotyping / serogrouping, is needed to monitor the impact of bacterial diseases vaccines.  Genotyping studies are important for tracking transmission patterns of viral VPDs. Another area of interest includes evaluation of current diagnostic assays. 


 



  • Assist in the development a training needs assessment to include all of the State Public Health Laboratories (SPHL) in consultation with the Association for Public Health Laboratories (APHL) staff and CDC subject matter experts (SMEs). 

  • Analyze the results of the needs assessment and, in consultation with the APHL staff and CDC SMEs, provide a written summary of the results along with recommendations for future trainings and assessments.

  • Develop training goals and competencies in consultation with the APHL staff and CDC SMEs. 

  • Assist in the development of laboratory management skills or team building in consultation with the APHL staff and CDC SMEs

  • Prepare regular reports to update partners and sponsors on activities.

  • Attend conference calls with CDC laboratories and/or APHL staff, participate in the monthly project leadership meeting, and other ad hoc meetings as needed;

  • Assist in the development of a plan for proficiency testing and novel testing panels in consultation with the APHL staff and CDC SMEs. 

  • Assist the APHL staff in the facilitation of discussion to evaluate the need for centers of excellence

  • Track, measure, and report programmatic and fiscal activity and economic impact as required by this SOW, ARRA

 


 


Qualifications:  Master of Public Health or a doctoral degree in public health or an allied health field, combined with a minimum of 5 years of related work experience is required.  Technical work experience in the conduct of clinical or health related research studies including writing research study protocols, data management and data analysis are required.  Effective verbal and written communication skill are essential. 


 


Travel:  Some travel is anticipated
